Default Rode NT-5s

Hey, I just bought a couple Rode NT-5s to stereo mic my guitar. I was thinking about running it through an Mbox 2 Mini, but I can't tell if that has 2 mic inputs or not. If that's not enough, what would you guys recommend?

I use a Tascam US-122. I think it's been replaced by a different model now, but it works fine for what I do. Go to my music page below for recording samples.

Is this for recording or live micing? What's your budget?

The MBox 2 Mini only has one microphone input.

After the mic preamp, where are you sending the signal? PC/Mac, or some other recording device? In other words, what kind of cable connection will you need coming from the mic preamp?

I just picked up a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra yesterday myself. I haven't really had time to play with it much, but it seems to be fairly easy to work with. USB "2" supposed to be faster than firewire (480 -v- 400) and 4 preamps with high end filtering. Only hooked it up dialed it to center and put in 1 song with a couple cheap mics last night but it came out darn clean.

oh about 3 1/2 bills too

This unit has two mic preamps, USB and SPDIF digital outs, for $200 from the discounters.

The MBox 2 Mini has a 2x2 topology. It can accept two channels at the same time and it can output two channels at the same time. Because of the way it is designed, the best way to use it with a pair of Rode NT5 microphones is to purchase a two channel (dual mono) mic preamp and connect the mic preamp, with appropriate patch cables, to the two line in level jacks on the MBox 2 Mini.

From the Digidesign.com website:

Quote:
Two simultaneous analog inputs and outputs
One XLR analog input for connecting a microphone
Two ¼” line-/instrument-level (DI) analog inputs for connecting guitars, basses, keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, and more

Well, that's not necessary - the 2 Mini is already a mic pre, but only has one XLR input. If you start with a dual-XLR (two channel) mic pre with USB output, then you don't need the 2 Mini at all. I don't think the OP has the 2 Mini yet, no?

That's correct, I have not purchased one yet. The preamps you guys posted look great for the money, the only thing is: i've used pro tools le alot in the past, is the software that comes with these products as well put together/easy to use?

You can use just about any of the available software, no need to buy more programs if you already have one. Unless, you want something different. The Fast Track comes with Ableton "live", but just the intro version. I just use my cakewalk, or audacity. If you don't have a software package you can always download Audacity free too.

Then just get a MBox2, instead of the MBox 2 mini, if you want to you PTLE.

Werx, I have the same mics & they're great for stereo miking the guitar. I'm not familiar with the interface you're looking at. I'm using a Lexicon Omega that I'm pretty happy with:

+1, also ... you can't go wrong with Lexicon, IMO.
