Speaking from my own experience quite some time ago, I had tried a set of nylon strings on my Sigma D28 (steel-string design) guitar. The effect was pretty un-inspiring: To my ears, the sound was weak, the tone lacked both depth and clarity, and the intonation seemed to be off. Did it "work?" In the sense that it played musical notes, yes, it "worked," but I doubt many folks would want to play such an instrument for very long (with those strings on it).
