Default Builders' favourite builders

Hi there,

I thought that this could be a funny/interesting thread. Whenever I order a custom guitar, I ask the builder which builders he would choose if he could have three guitars from any builder in the world. I got two answers so far (I still do not owe that many guitars) from well known luthiers.

The first:
John Slobod, Ed Claxton, and a classical builder whose name I forgot

The second:
Fred Carlson, Steve Klein, Michael Bashkin

So the question that goes to all you builders out there: What would be your favourite three?

I'm not qualified to respond to this thread, since I'm not really a builder and I have played very few handmade guitars other than what has come out of my shop, but I'll answer anyway.
Alan Carruth, Trevor Gore, and Bruce Sexauer

Thanks Fred, from every Kinnaird for that vote...even if it's 1/2 each.

As a builder, I would love to own:

1) Jimmy Caldwell, who is in my opinion the finest builder in the state of Texas.
2) Hans Brentrup, who unfortunately will not be able to comply...sigh...
3) Jeffrey Elliott, who has been a constant well of inspiration for me.

I love threads like this, they get you thinking!

Steve

One guitar from each of my two mentors, John Greven and Ervin Somogyi would be tops on my radar, if my pockets were deep enough

When I asked Burton this question in private, he said:

1) My early career
2) The middle of my career
3) My current work

There are so many, it makes my head spin. But the top of my list is always Ervin Somogyi, followed by Jason Kostal, Michi Matsuda, and a whole long line of young Somogyi proteges;
Fighting for the top spot is definitely Matthias and Matthew at Casimi Guitars in South Africa; and certainly, Jordan McConnell, and Joel Stehr, and Joel Michaud. I'm a longtime fan of Steve Kinnaird and Ryan Middlebrooks' work, and Brother John Kinnaird as well. What a talented family! Tim McKnight is definitely a top contender, as is Mark Hatcher. My friend Bevan Frost (Big Hollow Guitars) is also crazy-good. And a modern legend from Canada, David Wren. And Sergei DeJonge. There are so many...

And I have to give a special nod to my friend and shop partner, Joel Teel, who I've been teaching the Edwinson method, and he already is building world class guitars. Keep an eye on Joel- his star is definitely rising.

What a drag being a lefty. Ugg. I have only had a the pleasure of playing one hand built guitar, and that is the David Wren I made 35 yrs ago in Daves shop.
However looking at the build threads in the forum, I would dearly love to play a Kinnaird (any) a Mark Hatcher, and a current Dave Wren. In fact I have a set of cloud cocobolo WOW!! That I would love to have Dave use in a lefty Remuda for me. Russ

I'll have a lefty Hatcher in, oh, about 2 years, if you want to come play it. [emoji6]
