is it possible to sing an Elvis song without the Elvis voice?
Whenever I hear someone sing an Elvis song, even a cover that Elvis did, the Elvis ghost comes back.
I am very much an Elvis fan. I love even the trashy disposable pop songs that he sometimes sang, and whenever I sing one of his songs, the 'Elvis' seems to come through. I am not even American, so I have no reason to sing like him, but I can't seem to stop myself from doing it. It's not only me though. whenever I hear somebody else sing one of Elvis' songs, he's in there somewhere struggling to come through! like people simply cannot help it. Is this because the songs he sang have become synonymous with the person, and so the two are inseparable? Next time you hear somebody sing an old Elvis song, listen out for it, and you will probably hear the impersonation come over, even when the singer is consciously trying to avoid it. The man really was a phenomenon. I think he'll still be around when humanity bails out to a new planet. Wherever humanity goes, Elvis is certain to go too. Richard,
Although I'm primarily an instrumental composer, I do sing a couple of songs I wrote, and an occasional cover. Here's my arrangement of Mystery Train, (played on my Flammang L-40) written by Junior Parker, but made famous by Scotty Moore. I don't sound a thing like Scotty, or the singer he was backing up. Richard,
Elvis' stylistic stamp was so strong it was hard to imagine any other voice, so you're certainly not imagining anything. My advantage is that I became aware of Mystery Train via The Band on Moondog Matinee, so I wasn't 'imprinted'. I also have the advantage of not being a singer, therefore knowing my limitations. As a woman I was able to do it for a show. I did “If I can Dream”
keep lips pursed and do a “smile” only on the right side. “why” sounds like “waa” study him it’s fun. |

Shawn Colvin's version of "Viva, Las Vegas" is haunting. It plays over the closing credits of the film "The Big Lebowski," but unfortunately, is not on the soundtrack album for that film. Nor (as far as I know) does the song appear on any of Colvin's CDs. There is a version on YouTube, however, and it is well worth checking out.

Wow, Howard... superb! That's the best version of "Mystery Train" I've ever heard. Thanks very much for posting.
Richard1... I love Elvis, but I don't think you have to sound like him to sing his songs. Mary Flower also did a great version of "Mystery Train" and needless to say, she doesn't sound anything like him. |

Yes, you can make any song your own. Here's my favorite rendition of an Elvis song:

I sing Little Sister, but prefer to sing it closer to Dwight Yoakams version. This may be blasphemy, but I think Dwight did a much better version than Elvis.
