Some times less is more

My gigging rig was fairly straight forward :

A nice front end with a power conditioner, a rack stereo reverb , a rack 2 channel combi EQ Limiter and mic pre, all in a 6 pace rolling rack and single tower Fishman SA220 PA speaker

Less is more?

How about no p/a at all for audiences up to 50-80 (done that).

Or one large condenser mic' for a 5 piece band to 150 audience (done that).

Or one large condenser mic' for a solo singer/guitarist to a 5000 seat venue (seen that).

We haven't actually got to the need to plug in yet!!!!

Over the years, after trying all kinds of geegaws in my signal chain, I've always settled on coming back to just my plugged-in guitar and mic'ed voice into good-quality PA speakers. If anything, I may use a hint of reverb on my vocals. That's all!

Keep the mic' behind the speaker line, the single mic' option doesn't work well with something like the Bose column systems where the speakers are behind you.

Indoors, you need to e/q the room. Turn up the mic' until it feeds back and tap down that frequency, then turn it up again and tap down the second room feedback frequency, then turn the mic' down a little so that it is not "hot" and you are good to go.

Default Henry David Thoreau: “Simplify, Simplify”

A wise man posted this response to a hare-brained scheme I described.

Quote:
#1 priority for any decent soundtech is to become an invisible link between artist and audience and this should be the same for the machinery involved. The technology has evolved over time into a mature, reliable system which, in an ideal world, provides a platform for the artist to do his/her thing and have that conveyed to the (hopefully) paying public. Anything that gets in the way is to be avoided and to be deliberately obstructive seems a little self-indulgent.
Shufflebeat, in this thread, page 3

I still have the scheme and intend to use it, but only when it is foolproof against this fool.

Yes. I find myself arriving at the strategy in many things in my life...

I think that given the nice pickup in that Yamaha I would simplify too. Less is more is a good maxim to live by.
