Default Greenfield commission

I've desired a Greenfield for a number of years, and that longing strengthened last year at the Artisan Guitar Show after meeting Michael and seeing, hearing, and playing his guitars. So this year at 60--realizing I have many more years behind me than in front--I went to the Artisan Guitar Show again, spoke with Michael a little more in depth, and again saw, heard, and played his guitars. To my senses, Michael's impeccable craftsmanship and build philosophy, along with the tone, playability, and aesthetics of his guitars, just set them apart from any others and check all the boxes for me; so, I decided to take the plunge and secure a build spot (looking at early 2020)!

Michael & I will get into the weeds and have a detailed conversation about all the particulars next month when he returns from Europe, so I don't have a lot to share at this time; but, I'm strongly leaning toward a model G1 with Florentine cutaway, Laskin inspired arm bevel, and Michael's heel swoosh. I have some tonewood ideas floating around in my head, but will wait to bounce them off Michael before deciding. Anyway, I'm just extremely excited about this and wanted to share it with my fellow AGF'ers. Below is a pic of Michael & I from this year's Artisan Show. He's the real deal...a genuinely nice person and craftsman of the highest order, who is passionate and uncompromising about the instruments he creates to be perfect for his client's individual needs. This will be exciting, and I can't wait to get the ball rollin'!

After a major thinning of your collection, it begins again.

I’m looking forward to watching. Good luck.

Nah, not beginning again...finally ending. I just decided after much deliberation to commit and go all-in on a Greenfield. My Clapton and this Greenfield will be the perfect way to ride off into retirement!

Beautiful Guitar! I see you’re getting a G3 to join your G1...CONGRATS! Michael had a G3 at the Artisan Show with a Port Orford Cedar top & Flamed/figured Mahogany back & sides...it was magnificent, and one of the wood combinations I’m pondering.

It's a while back now, but I think my quote about Michael was something like "if impeccable craftsmanship, an uncompromising commitment to quality and luscious tone were horses ... Michael Greenfield would definitely have a ranch!" Congrats on your new order!

Congrats on your commission! That’s great. I hope your plan includes a build thread. Sure would like to watch it come together. Happy for ya!

Thanks Dennis! We're a ways from starting, but if/when Michael provides pics along the way, I'll be sure to post them.

Had my consultation with Michael today to nail down the build specs for my upcoming guitar. What a cool process...close to an hour answering all kind of questions about my tonal & musical preferences, playing style, my likes & dislikes about other guitars I’ve owned, and what I’m looking for in this guitar. After it was all said and done, we decided on the following:
  • Model G1
  • Non-cutaway
  • 25.34" scale
  • Port Orford Cedar soundboard (billet split, spruce bracing, no run-out)
  • Private Reserve Koa back & sides
  • Radially braced back plate with proprietary Greenfield Tone Halo
  • Laskin inspired arm rest
  • Ebony body binding
  • Fine violin line, wood purflings
  • Greenfield proprietary spalted Beech and abalone rosette
  • Compound 16"-20" radius quarter-sawn ebony fingerboard
  • 1-3/4" nut
  • 2-1/4" string spacing at bridge
  • Honduran Mahogany carbon graphite reinforced neck
  • Standard neck profile
  • Carved heel "swoosh"
  • Ebony peghead overlay with "g" logo
  • Adjustable 2-way non-compressive truss rod
  • Ebony string-through bridge (inspired by the designs of Steve Klein)
  • 1/4" bone nut & saddle
  • Greenfield "g" 510 tuners with ebony buttons (21:1 ratio)
  • Custom fit Main Stage carbon fiber flight case
Really excited...now for the wait.

Great specs, you can't go wrong with a G1. I love the non-cutaway approach.

Thank you Michael...as someone who has played more Greenfields than possibly anyone else except for Mr. Greenfield himself, I value your opinion greatly and appreciate the nod of approval! Obviously, I'm just thrilled with the choices, and will be very excited to see this come to life! BTW, Michael hasn't selected the exact set for my guitar yet; however, he did send me this as an example of what he's planning to use for my guitar from his stash of Private Reserve Koa. I think it's beyond magnificent!

Wow...

Yes. That is breathtaking! G’field’s stash is something scary but that set is on another level. Congratulations!
