Default Tom Doerr - the Brazilian build that took 5 years to start

Okay folks. Let’s do this. My first build thread. I originally commissioned this build 5 years ago, reserving the set and then...life happened. I’ll skip the details but, I back. And the build has begun. Here is a link to the original thread. I’m sorry the PB account is useless and I’m not going to sweat it. But, there will be new pics. First time trying Imgur. We’ll find out together how THAT works

After much consideration, I’ve gone back to where I started in my thinking. I wanted a big guitar with some ergonomic accommodations. I also wanted a bold tone that would also respond with articulation and nuance. I tend to push the limits of dynamics and need a guitar that will sound sweet and bellish, or rumble like Bo Diddly. Neil young cs 1970 to Michael Hedges (Oracle). Not that I am half the player of either. Sprinkle in some old acoustic blues, early R&B, Stones, Dylan And then 60’s/70’s Willie/Waylon/Guy Clark/Steve Goodman....Mexican/Spanish I’m all over the map. I need a guitar that will hang.

So a Modified Dread it will be. With his cutaway and anRyan bevel. I picked the wood from Toms Brazilian stash (which is truly something to behold) in ‘15. Since then, Tom found a wonderful Red Spruce top. Braz FB and Bridge with Ebony binding.

Here we go with the Imgur links. More to come as updates flow in from Tom. Expecting June/July delivery and NOW, I’m finally getting really excited!

Your lucky on so many fronts, but mostly to have Tom in the driver's seat.

Thanks for the kind words! This my first build thread so well
See how it goes. Super excited about it though.

Tom has a simply amazing stash of woods (esp BRW). And his shop so. Clean he probably pass a food-service inspection.

A lot of people have adopted the notion of finger style guitars versus flat pick guitars. I prefer to consider guitars to be more or less responsive. Regardless of the mode of play.

More coming as we go.

Tom has been busy. Sides laminated and bent. Top and back glued.

We talked quite a bit about the rosette. I wanted to stay “earthy” (no dead fish if I didn’t catch it and, or at least eat the rest for lunch). I also wanted to bring the Ebony from the binding in next to the Braz for the Rosette. Tom does some really nice marquetry inlays, I chose a more casual visual for this build. Plus I put my last real “extras” money in to the Top. I can’t recall seeing Red Spuce this clean before. So there you have it. Also, there’s one shot you’ll want your surf board. If Dick Dale and Willie Wonka had a guitar love-child...

Default Bracing started

Tom has the bracing on top and back. Logo in place. The shaping has begun.

Thought some pics would be a nice pick-me-up today.

I’ll keep posting! Love how painfully clean Tom’s work is - regularly.

Thanks for the great photo's. That is a nice set of braz. there, and the spruce is pretty sweet too.
Regarding the change from PB to Imgur, I think you will be very pleased with imgur. I was with PB for a few years and just switched to Imgur, Imgur is much faster and much easier to use.

Thanks! And I couldn’t agree more about Imgur. Once you get used to it, and it easy, it’s way preferable; at least for my needs.

Guess what? THAT was Tom’s suggestion as well. And I hope it goes without saying but credit to him for the pics as well!
