As others suggest, I don’t think this is a true incompatibility between your body and OM size guitars. People play 0 and 00 guitars, ukuleles, and mandolins. There are lots of ways to hold a guitar other than the way you’re describing, as Silly is saying. If you want to slouch on your guitar like Neil you, get a dreadnought. Otherwise, find the one with the tone you love and keep experimenting until you get it.

Another quick, easy, & inexpensive answer is to get a classical guitar footrest to elevate his right foot to his preferred playing height.

acoustic guitar that has a larger bout so I can rest my arm on it
Try out some Jumboes! Large lower bout automatically qualifies, but even a smaller Jumbo might qualify too. It's really all about how you feel playing it. Small waist allows the guitar to sit lower than you might think on your lap allowing easy access to the strings. Jumboes are great strummers, but they also are great fingerpickers too. I fingerpick all my instruments, which as you can see includes many Jumboes. Also Grand Orchestras, which are the model that Taylor used to replace their Jumboes. Even the smaller Grand Concerts have a shape closely related to a Jumbo. I play right handed with the guitar resting on my left leg in a sort of classical position (no foot rest), and favor stringing my six string guitars with Ellixir PB HD Light gauge (.013 - .053). By the way, Jumboes sound really great any which way you play them. Don .

If you can't find an ergonomic position that works for your OM, you may want audition a 16" wide slope shoulder jumbo, like a Collings CJ, Gibson, Kopp, Fairbanks, Walker, etc., etc. Another suggestion is the Waterloo (Collings) Jumbo King. At 15 3/4" wide and 5" deep, there is a lot of real estate to rest your arm on.

acoustic guitar that has a larger bout so I can rest my arm on it
I had a similar problem- I am pretty tall with a long torso. I wanted a “thin” but large guitar. My very new Epiphone Casino is one way to fix it! Pretty loud acoustically but sounds even better through some pedals and an amp
I rotate between my Yamaha LL16 on right leg, Telecaster in classical position on left leg and now my Casino on right leg. I also have a large yoga block to elevate left or right foot when I feel like it. I also switch between a stool and chair. Last edited by PerryE; 01-17-2022 at 10:27 AM. |

Sadly I feel your pain. OM guitars are just to small for me. I cant get in a good position without the aid of a foot stool. Then of course your knee is elevated and that eventually turns into various other discomfort. I also do not like using straps but... I use a neck up on my OM when sitting always now. I found the trick was to use a high quality office chair with removeable arm wrests. Between that and a foot stool I am constantly moving my position. My OM stays up high and I am never in one position for long.

What do you mean when you say "I dont tilt my guitar backwards at all?"
Do you mean not moving the neck front to back, like a boat rudder? Of do you mean not moving the neck like the hand of a clock, if 3-9 were neck parallel to the floor and 12-6 were straight up and down? Many electric guitar players practice sitting down with their right arm straight and the guitar neck parallel to the floor. Then when they do go to play standing, to preserve their learned posture then end up hanging the guitar nearly down to their hips. I'd normally chime in here with my usually tips on how to determine correct playing posture, both seated and standing, but I'll leave that to Silly Moustache. Besides, most of my tips involving recommending using a strap, both seated and standing.

How can something that FEELS so comfortable make it impossible to play cleanly at any speed at all. It just ain't right.

IMO the guitar doesn't appear to be the problem but the way you hold it is. I think you should give this guitar support a try before you get rid of the guitar. You don't have to have a strap button to use it and you can move it around to find the best fit.

I know you say you don't want to bother with tools to help your position, but the obvious answer is a "Neckup". I use one playing four nights a week at the moment with no issues at all and I'm 72.
