Any Hammond B-3 players here?
No particular question, just wondering. Any thoughts, comments, anecdotes welcome.

Many years ago. While there are some very very good digital plug-ins yadda yadda that come close to duplicating the sound, for me, there is nothing like a real Leslie kicking in on B3. Nothing. Assuming of course that one HAS a Leslie, which most had because a B3 without one is simply not the same.
The problem was that moving a B3/Leslie around is a LOT more of a pain in the butt than a digital workstation which, frankly do give a lot more options. Thus the days of bands with B3s faded. Practically speaking using a B3 outside of a studio is nuts. They are unique though. Have not seen one in a long time. Do you have one?

I've never owned one, but I did used to mess around with a friend's B3/Leslie cab quite a bit back in the day. There's nothing quite like that sound, it's fabulous. This was back when bands like Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Electric Flag were in their heyday, and my friends had a really good big band with a horn section - a Hammond and a Leslie were required for bands like that. An interesting anecdote: The Leslie developed a problem and had to be shipped back to the mfg to be repaired. Since they were a gigging band, the dealer gave my friend a Vox Super Beatle to use in the interim - it was the biggest amp they had at the store. When the repair was completed, they told him to come down and pick up his Leslie, but never asked him to bring back the Super Beatle. Things were a bit more casual in those days - they never even missed it. He ended up using both of them onstage for some gigs. Sounded awesome!

I'm lucky enough to play drums in an organ trio. We play at our organist's house and he has a B3/Leslie setup, and as others have said, it can't be replaced, or moved. When we play out, he has a Hammond SK-2 that he run's through a pair of QSC K12.2s and it get's pretty close, and definitely fits the bill for what we are doing. But I look forward to practices with the real thing.

On my Yamaha Motif XS7 I'm more into the ePiano sounds than the organ voices, but here's a guy sort of channeling Jimmy Smith on a Motif. (Go out to second 49)....

Played in a band back in the 70s with a dude who played one. Sounded great.
I can’t tell y’all about the hassles of moving it with breaking forum rules.

I practiced every Thursday night with some guys in a
little room with a LOUD drummer and a Hammond organ with Leslie speakers. When the speakers got spun up they were really cool, but no amount of hearing protection was enough to allow me to keep going there after about a year. Sure was fun, though... -Mike |

B-3
I went to a small all boys high school in Columbus, Ohio with a guy was a really talented jazz keyboard player. We hung out a lot sophomore year ('75-'76), but drifted apart after that year. I've lived in the Philly area since 1983. About 20 years ago I was driving , listening to Temple University's jazz station, when the dj, a music professor at Temple, said something along the lines of, "I'm going to play a song now by a man who is an absolute master of the Hammond B-3 organ. He's from Columbus, Ohio; his name is Tony Monaco." Holy moly - I almost drove off the freeway! I contacted Tony and we got together when he was in town for a gig. Dude is all that; he plays jazz festivals all over the world.

I have a Hammond C-3 and Leslie 122 which I've had for about 15 years. I got my first C-3 with two 147 Leslies in the 70s and gigged with it a lot. I went without a Hammond through the 80s and bought another C-3 in the early 90s which I let go. My current C-3 is up for sale due to an upcoming long distance move. I'm more into Piano these days.
