Default Sound hole question

How much will a sound hole/port guitar affect a vocal mic?

Hi jjbig-etc

If I missed your intent, please explain a bit more. I think I can picture what you are asking,

If you asking if a side port affects vocal mics, My Kronbauer has a side port which doesn't affect my vocal mic at all, or inject stray sound.

It's because the mics used for vocals specialize in picking up the inch-n-a-half in front of the capsule, and reject sound from the sides and back. My side port is at least 6 inches away & well to the side of the capsule.

Thanks. I found an instrument I was considering owning and it has a sound hole/port. Have never been around one.

Hi jjbig-etc
I own two guitars with side-ports and 3 without. The two with are better for having them, and the ones without are better without them.

But they should not interfere with mics, nor increase feedback.

One exception to side ports improving sound/tone might be a Batson I played once. This thing had terribly harsh tone, and was not a pleasant experience. Novel, yup. Beautiful, absolutely stunning cosmetically. Horrible sounding when playing it…

I've played dozens of guitars with side ports which contributed to a better ability for the player to hear the instrument in a positive way. This Batson certainly did NOT accomplish that.

Many of mine have ports and I have not noticed any difference with a mike. I don't normally use pickups, but have a Myers with a suction cup that I have poked inside through the port when I need more sound than the normal mike will provide. It seems to work well there and is barely visible to the audience.

I don't have any with ports,

but I think I get what you're asking

A traidtional vocal mic, (Sm58 or similar) not sure how much gets in there, not enough to matter I'd venture. you gotta be right on top of those most of the time.

if you are using a studio ready condenser mic, those pickup farts from spiders, so yea, a sound port would surely get in there.
