Carey,
Thanks so much for sharing this link and very interesting read. These guys were good buddies. John Mills, although nowhere near as well known as Bream, is no slouch either as a player and musical historian. Not surprising to learn that Bream didn't much care for Segovia's style of teaching. Segovia should have attended Bream's master classes for some insights on how it should be done. Thanks again! Enjoyed it a lot.

That was a great article, thanks for sharing. JB was one of the giants, and such a character. Sadly missed.

Andre and waterboy, you are both welcome. It's good to hear these snippets about Bream, especially from John Mills! And Andre, I agree about Bream's
masterclasses being a fine model, and about John Mills's playing- I just wish he had recorded more. Maybe this is too obvious, but I do think that Mills had (has?) a really nice balance of the best qualities of Segovia, Bream (still my favorite, by a long way), and Williams. A quote from Jose Romanillos that I like: "Bream showed me that it has to come from your guts." |

Quote:
My classical guitar teacher years ago introduced me to his music. I used to have a cassette tape of this recording by Mills: 20th century guitar music It was one that he had recorded with special focus on student repertoire. I've since lost the tape, but I kept the booklet it came with. It contains some great and valuable playing insights on, for example, Brouwer's Etudes and the Ponce Preludes. I see that it is still available, but on vinyl only (only $3.67!). What a deal. This "Evolucion DVD" looks very interesting as well, but is only reasonably available in the UK and mainland Europe.

I'm glad you linked to that Mills DVD, which I've tried to order a couple of times, so far unsuccessfully. Here's a trailer for it, for those who haven't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxBc44G3Taw

The more I read about Bream, the more I wish I could have met him. He seems like a hoot.

It looks like there are now some reasonably-priced copies of this book available- lots of first-person anecdotes and photos in it:
