Barry, yeah, we're probably whistling in the wind, you and I. But I like that Yamaha is superb in their Q/C processes (something Bozeman has struggled with for years); that they're privately held, so they take the long view and aren't driven by some venture capital venture firm hungry for quarterly profits; and that their lines, whether pianos, waverunners or guitars, are leaders in every segment they participate in.

But they're smart too and thus probably have zero interest in the tangled hornet's nest known as Gibson.

Traded my last two out 5 days after they filed. First time in a long time no Gibsons in the house. They went down the crapper for me after the stupid rosewood stuff and I had told Mrs they would be out of here if and when they declared. One was a gift from her, I owed her an explanation. I don't care who owns them as long as I don't.

I believe it will be Heinz. They make excellent ketchup. I can only imagine what they could do for a Les Paul.

There are two threads going on here. The fantasy calls and the realistic attempts. Mine was fantasy. Realistically I think the guitar part of the company will end up being a parody of itself.

I clicked on "Should Fender buy Gibson" and ended up here. Hmpff.

Anyhow: No, Fender should not buy Gibson. Fender will be quite busy enough managing their own business, for the foreseeable future. Such a move would probably damage both brands.

Whoever owns Fender? They will get Gibson. Or maybe Disney!

Default acquire Gibson?

I don't like Gibson guitars. From the uncomfortable necks to the paint jobs, to the ridiculous prices, I don't like Gibson's

My nominee for a buyer though is Shriener's sausage shop in midtown Phoenix, Az.

They make great polish sausage, both fresh and smoked, and a variety of other sausages. Nice people very fair pricing..........That's who I would think could pull this guitar shop out of the quagmire of confusion it finds itself in.

You cannot compare Gibson to Taylor. Taylor is a "Johnny-come-lately" company with nowhere near the heritage of a Gibson.Taylor was already an avant-garde company easily mold able when Powers took over. It had no Heritage, just a segment of the market based on being different and Bob Taylor's name.

If you want to un-enslave Gibson from its history and tradition, you will have to abandon much of what made it what it is. If you abandon Gibson history you will lose any semblance of who Gibson is and it is doomed.

As I said, an Iacocca type could "restore" the confidence in the brand by focusing on a combination of the heritage and the "New Gibson".

Buggy whips had heritage as well as mimeograph machines. What happened to them? Heritage does not pay the bills, sales and good management does. Taylor may not have heritage but they’re one of the largest and strongest companies in the market. Any investor will modernize the companies production facilities and trim their offerings. GM did that to survive in a changing world. They discontinued brands and consolidated production to maximize profitability. That’s the only way companies survive in todays world.

It's a pity Gibson don't build ukes anymore. Warren Buffett has been a uke player for nearly 70 years.

Wow, 74 posts in this thread and I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Tony Polecastro’s interview with Ren Ferguson:

Hear it from Ren himself, the problems at Gibson might be much harder to solve than anyone might think.

That was my first thought, too.

The supreme irony would be Heritage Guitars acquiring Gibson (minus the debt load).

Not sure what Heinz can offer up given there already are way more than 57 varieties of Les Pauls.

I edited as I saw that I spelled Gibson as Gibon, perhaps I would have left it alone if I had written Gibbon, instead.

I was thinking of buying them, but that would take all the fun out of my guitar playing.
