Thanks for posting. Still saddened by his death. He's one of the most prolific writers in Rock history, IMO.

I like his covers better than his originals. The Thunderclap Newman thing. The John Sebastian Thing. The Lost Highway. Little Red Rooster. So many great covers.

First time we saw him live they did "Hang on Sloopy." It was awesome.

So many great songs from TP. He did this one a variety of ways and it’s not one everyone has heard but it’s my favorite.
CRANK IT UP !

Quote:
I saw them for the first time in 1979, when he was touring behind "Dagnabbit The Torpedoes" (hey, the forum's automated censor won't take the real title). I was already into him from his first two albums but that show and that album put him, deservedly, into the stratosphere. "Here Comes My Girl" sounded great on the radio in those days, but it's probably about my 6th favorite song on that album. "Here Comes My Girl" and "Don't Do Me Like That" were two of the biggest hits on that album, but there are five other songs I liked a LOT more and that's not because there's anything wrong with those two songs, but the whole album was SOOOO strong. He's written so many great songs I've forgotten about a lot of them, only to completely rediscover them later. When "Highway Companion" came out 15 years ago or so, I bought it, listened to it a lot, but it wasn't among his best albums and it kind of fell out of the rotation. Sometime in the past few months I heard "Square One" from that album, I think it might have even been in some kind of campaign video, and I had completely forgotten that beautiful little song. Now it's a t the top of my rotation and I've been playing and singing it a lot too. The guy was just incredibly good. And I don't think he lost much over the years either. -Ray

I really disliked what Jeff Lynne's influence did to Petty's sound - both production-wise and IMO he somehow got Tom hooked on that stupid "polka" kick-snare-kick-snare thing. All the swing left his songs when Stan Lynch departed. I'll have to go and find some more recent examples and give his newer stuff another chance.

Hard to pick a favorite. It's the whole sound. For my $$, Tom Petty and John Fogerty are/were absolute masters of the simple but soulful lyric and melody. Always a turn of phrase that grabs you and then three chords straight to the heart. RIP, Tom.
