Martin 000-28 or 00-28?
Wife said I can get a new guitar (yeah!). Have played a variety of 0, 00, and 000 Martins. I'm only 5'8" with smallish hands, so a D and an OM are out.
So which would you get, a 00 or 000? I think an 0, which I do love, is a bit quiet. Thx |

Both 00 or 000 are good! At 5’8” 000 is not a problem. 000 is 15” in its lower bout, which is Taylor’s Grand Concert’s size. You prefer the 28 series to the 18 series?

00
Go for the 00!
My reasoning has nothing to do with tone or music or Martin or anything... My reasoning is- everyone has 000's but you don't seem to see many 00's. So be unique and blaze your own path!

When I first bought my 0028, I thought it was a bit on the quiet side, especially compared to my Eastman E20-OM (which is really a 000 design). But the tone is exactly what I was looking for. And with time. I no longer think of the 0028 as particularly quiet. The volume is very similar to my Taylor GC7, which like the 0028, is another concert size guitar.

Garth,
A lot depends on the projection & volume you're looking for in a guitar. My Martin 00-28 (reimagined) is super comfortable to play, great neck for smaller hands, very balanced, nice tone, and projects beyond it's size. The 000-28 is similar, with more power! Both are quality instruments. You may also want to consider a 12-fret (Taylor is one example). The hunt is 1/2 the fun ... ENJOY! |

Big fan of small guitars. Used to be 5’8”, but not anymore. Close enough to understand. I have a 00, an 0 (PJ), and an OM. They aren’t for sale, but they are really nice guitars and can’t be far from you. If weather is nice enough for you, I will be glad to show them all to you and you can get a sense of the size. Will have to be outside. We can keep good distance out back on the patio and you can play and see what you think. If this appeals to you, let me know and we can watch for a good day. I am one block out of DC in Maryland.
Jeff

Martin 000 and OM are exactly the same size. I have a 2019 OM-28 and it’s outstanding and very versatile.

Why? They all have the same string spacing.

I’m 5’10”, around 170lbs, for me the perfect size is a 00. I like the way it sits in my lap, there’s less reach to the nut than an OM or 000, body size is easier on the shoulders,.. And I think the 00 body size has the most balanced voice, bass to treble response.

I play a fair bit of irish/scots trad in a couple of pub sessions accompanying lead instruments such as fiddles, uileann pipes, concertinas etc.
I fingerpick and strum to asccompany my own singing and I am trying to progress fingerstyle. While I might prefer the Dread for some work, especially lowered to DADGAD where my D17 is just beautiful (but the 000 can wear that dress too), the 000 has its own good points in those area, beats out the dread for more delicate left hand work (but lots of better players than me use dreads for that so it's obviously more to do with the player than the guitar...). As an all rounder, the one guitar to pack when I head to a session. the 000 is perfect for me. And a 000-28 is a really nice guitar. I did try an 00 and I felt it would be under powered in the pub sessions in which I play, which are usually unamplified, but it was a lovely instrument. I'd happily have one for playing at home and recording.

I would say it would depend on the type of music you play and your playing style. If you strum with a light pick or fingerpick with bare fingers then you may want to go for the bigger body 000 (which, as has been said, is the same size as an OM). I play old time/Americana with a thicker flatpick and also thumb pick and metal fingerpicks - much along the same playing style of Tim O'Brian. So my choice of the two would be the 00-28. I'd get more than enough kick from it (particularly once it was played in for a while) and a little more clarity. But I'm not you! The offer from Jeff to go and try them out is very kind and something to consider.
