What is the exact purpose of these plugins? (I just use headphones to "master" also)

It tries to get rid of the downside of using headphones - totally isolated left and right side, lack of room ambience, sounding "too close" to your ears, etc, and make it sound like you are listening over good studio monitors in an acoustically treated room. How much that helps with the result is unclear, but the effect is uncanny - I thought I must have left my speakers on when I first tried it. The sound even changes as you move your head, like if you lean toward one speaker. So basically it promises to give you the experience/benefits of mixing in a great room over great speakers while sitting at home with headphones on. Does it work? I don't have a strong opinion, but it's interesting

Interesting
Can we assume you mean the Waves plugin in the OP ? And can you be a bit more specific as to why you think it does not "really" work ....
i.e. for example Do think the sound field it presents is not (really) like having a set of monitors in a decent room and can you explain why or what is different ?
