Me...2007 Toyota Avalon Limited.

My wife...2013 Lexus 300h hybrid.

Both purchased used (certified platinum). Prior to these, several decades of driving Volvos and one Honda...all beloved old beasts (we keep our cars a long time).

Cheers,

Dirk

Default What car do you drive?

We have five kids and I spend too much time hauling stuff, so it’s trucks for us. The wife drives a suburban and I drive a paid-off 2013 F150!! My run Around town vehicle is a Polaris Ranger Crew 900 XP

Default Suddenly we're a Ford family...

After driving European cars for 40 years, I helped my daughter buy a hybrid C-Max. I liked it so much that I traded my GTI for another C-Max, the plug-in Energi model. Next, we traded our Tiguan for her Ford. Now, I spend almost as much on guitar strings as on gas, and nothing (so far) on repairs. It's a car that's seldom noticed, but I'm happy with it.

I’ve been driving a 2010 Honda Odyssey since both my eldest was in preschool. It’s had a hard life but I have heard that now is the time to purchase a new car. I’d love to get a Toyota Tacoma or Tundra for the hauling capabilities (for home improvement projects and my woodworking hobby) but in all honesty with the seats removed or dropped down I can actually haul full 4’x8’ sheets of plywood or whatever and still be able to close the rear hatch.

My wife and I have a Subaru XV - I think it's called 'cross-over' in the USA.
I used to be President of a Datsun club here in Australia when I owned this car.

Thanks to being rear ended by a truck in May, I’m now driving a 2017 Volvo XC60 or my 2005 Nissan 350Z Anniversary Edition.

I've established Porter's 90% rule for choosing one's primary vehicle. Porter's 90% rule states that the vehicle of your choosing should satisfy 90% of your vehicular needs. If you only need to haul stuff once in a blue moon (<90% of the time) then don't buy a truck or van. If most of your driving involves moving a gaggle of kids and their stuff, then a minivan would seem to be the way to go.

My primary vehicle is a 2016 Honda CRV. It gets decent gas mileage, is comfortable and has been very reliable. It's fold-down back seat offers good utility, and AWD makes it a good poor-weather vehicle. With the installed trailer hitch, it does a great job of hauling bikes and/or towing my kayak trailer. Ergo, it meets the 90% criteria nicely.

My 2010 Mazda MX5 is a fun, fair-weather vehicle that has two seats and a soft top so it doesn't come anywhere close to satisfying the 90% criteria although it does work well for my commutes to my indoor swim club when the weather's good. It's also great for fun rides on the nearby Skyline Drive, Blueridge Parkway and scenic country roads that abound in my neck of the woods. The Mazda doesn't have to meet 90% of my needs because it's not my primary vehicle, and I couldn't imagine owning it as my only vehicle; but together they put the fun in a functional duo that meet my needs while offering a lot of driving pleasure...

Our everyday driver/commuter is a 2017 Subaru Forester. My wife has a 2004 Toyota Tacoma that she dearly loves and we both have Jeeps. Hers is a 2000 and mine is a 2015.

I also have a Factory Five 1965 Shelby Cobra replica that I will someday finish.
