In other words, you don't like the Beatles.

Cool

I Wanna be Your Man

It sounds formulaic and a little simple.

There are lots of songs that folks have mentioned that I absolutely love, so it's all a matter of personal taste, obviously. But so far no one has felt compelled to defend one of the songs that I mentioned I could do without, "Blue Jay Way."

George Harrison Pretending To Play "Blue Jay Way"

But I'm sure there's someone out there who feels that "Blue Jay Way" says all there is to say about life, and that I'm a complete idiot for disliking it.

Different strokes for different folks....

PS: I, too, really like "Taxman" :

You know, for me, it is kind of like the experience I had after my Mom died: I even missed the things that she used to do that made me crazy, because at the most important and most fundamental level, I just loved her and missed her. So even the Beatles songs that I disliked from the get go, or songs that I came to dislike because I heard them too often on the radio...even those i hold in a glow of affection today.

That time of my life is gone, never to come again, and most of the musical companions of that time, particularly The Beatles, are gone. And there will never be another phenomenon like Beatlemania again. It is all precious...

Well put, Rich. I agree.

I'm still not going to listen to "Blue Jay Way" or "Mr. Moonlight," though!

I feel much the same myself. I remember watching Magical Mystery Tour in black and white on its first showing, and revelling in the bafflement I was experiencing, and for many years I did find Blue Jay Way pretty tedious. Not that it mattered much. In the mid/late sixties everything was dazzling, and the future was bursting with promise.

Today it's quite different. There's that 'golden stain of time' over it all, and I'll gladly listen to BJW anytime and get something out of the experience. I don't think this is due to indoctrination or wishful thinking, or a diminution of sensibility. It's a different perspective created by the passage of a lot of time.

Default Yellow Submarine

From the late, great comedian Bill Hicks who deliberates the use of drugs in popular music...

"The Beatles were so high they let Ringo sing a couple of tunes. Tell me they weren't partying?"

""We all live in a Yellow Submarine", What! Do you know how high they must have been when they wrote that? They had to pull Ringo off the ceiling with a rake to get him to sing that song."

...and I concur.

You know, the funny thing is that I loved "Blue Jay Way" when I was a kid and listening to the "Magical Mystery Tour" album. I was young enough when the Beatles came out that my friends and sister and I all had our favorite Beatle, and mine was George. So whatever George wrote or sang I loved, because I identified personally with him (George was the youngest in the band, I was the youngest in my family, George had a hatchet face and an adenoidal voice, I have a hatchet face and an adenoidal voice...)

It wasn't until the past ten or fifteen years that I started disliking that particular song. It might have been when I was watching the TV special for "Magical Mystery Tour" on home video when I was watching George endlessly singing "Blue Jay Way" and realized: "Jeez, this song is really tedious..."

Haven't really been able to listen to it since.

That program aired on British TV but never on American TV, which was probably a wise move on the Beatles' part. As kids over here we desperately wanted to see it, but once I finally watched it decades later, I understood why it hadn't been broadcast in North America. Great songs, as always, but overall it was embarrassing to watch.

Anyway, I once loved or at least kind of dug "Blue Jay Way" because it was one of George's songs, but with a few decades of distance from the warm glow of youthful Beatles fandom, it's no longer appealing to me.

I still really like most of George's songs that appeared on the Beatles' albums, with one of my all-time favorites being the first song he wrote: "Don't Bother Me." George made a point during interviews in later life to talk about how much he hated that song and what a terrible song it is, but I think it's got an engaging chord progression and a good melody. So it's a good song so far as I'm concerned.

Hope that makes sense.

Oh yes I agree. Watching it today, my most prominent response is that it needed editing. There are aspects of the comedy that anticipate Monty Python, but the brilliance of those episodes is almost submerged beneath the excess of self-indulgent blather. But there was no one there to edit them; so what we have is what we have.

And what we have contains such gems. I've never tired of that sumptuously ironic performance of 'Your Mother Should Know'. It's a treat to watch their faces, and the choreography.

'Blue Jay Way'? Not a high point. But like you, Wade, I have a soft spot for George, and I accept it as part of the story without too much discomfort.

Would have been "Revolution #9", but it doesn't qualify as a song.

I like "Mr. Moonlight", and it's on my favorite Beatles' album, Beatles for Sale.

Doesn't matter to me who wrote it, just if the Beatles performed it.
Ditto, Honey Pie. Didn't have to think twice.

Let It Be. Total syrupy schmaltz or as John used to refer to them as "Paul's granny songs"....
