NGD: Guild GAD50 (birthday guitar)
Background to this purchase (feel free to skip this paragraph if you're not interested)So some of you may have read my previous post where I was looking for an alternate tuning/second guitar to my Martin 000C-16RGTE. At the time I was thinking that within the budget of 200-300 the best I could do would be a seagull or solid top Yamaha. Anyway, I unexpectedly found a Guild GAD-50 for $250 and was very impressed so I purchased it.
I just purchased this Guild GAD-50 off of craigslist today. So far I am very impressed. it looks nice, but much more importantly, it plays really well and sounds awesome. I already tuned it down to DADGAD and it is already really impressing me as I work on "Sligo Creek" by Al Petteway. My only concern is that the tuning heads seem kind of loose like a tiny turn changes the tone a lot. Lastly, does anyone know how to date a guild? I will be really interesting in hearing how this compares to my Martin. Pictures below.

Congrats and Happy Birthday! As far as the tuners go, sounds like they may be low ratio tuners. If they feel too easy to turn just screw it in a little bit.

This is from a thread in 2016. The OP was finminer.
"GAD's were built from 2004-2011. They have a round label inside with a GADXXXXX number on them. That, however, is not the serial number. GAD label numbers were sequential and did not directly relate to the date produced. However, there is a 10-digit stamped number on the heel block that DOES correlate to production date (1st two digits are year, 2nd two are month). The issue is that every shop and every quote you see shows the GAD number and very few are aware that there is a separate serial number." Hope that helps. |

Thanks! And excuse my ignorance but what does low ratio mean? And what would I tighten haha. Or is there a YouTube tutorial and what would I search haha.

Here: https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/ge...guitar-tuners/ There's a small screw in the tuner button. That's what you tighten.

Congrats!
I had bought a used D-120ce and the tuners were a little loose on it also. I had replaced the tuners on my Gibson J-45 when I bought it and I discovered that the Gibson tuners were a straight drop-in replacement for the Guild tuners. My Guild D-120 stays in dadgad and other lower tunings. Al's Sligo Creek is a fun one to learn. Happy birthday too!

To the OP: Why do you put your strings on the tuning posts backwards?

Excellent question haha. I didn't, the previous owner restrung it before selling. Given that they aren't even strung consistently by side I'm wondering if alcohol was involved haha. It just doesn't bother me enough to buy a new set of strings while these are still new.

Thanks! And yeah definitely! I am so impressed with this guitar. And for 250 it was way more guitar than I thought I would be able to get in that price range. It has just a smidge less bass than my Martin but it really sings in it's mid and high range sounds. I've had it tuned to DADGAD as my main project songs at the moment are Sligo Creek (in DADGAD) and Classical Gas (in standard) and it sounds so so sweet in this tuning (and in standard). I've thought about putting it back in standard just because I like it and wouldn't mind comparing it to my Martin which is in standard. someday I'll do the comparison. I think I'm in love haha.

Beautiful guitar. I continue to be amazed how much guitar you can get for so little money, these days. A little luck sometimes helps. Congrats.

Nice find! I've never played one of the GAD Guilds but have heard good things. Happy Birthday and NGD!
