Thanks, Doug. I'll look into booking a recording session. I don't think there are any studios near me, but there might be some I could travel to.

One thing I didn't see in skimming this thread is using close back headphones for monitoring while recording.

I have tried that and it allows me to hear what my mics are picking up and adjust my playing accordingly.

It's also critical for overdubbing.

I usually do that when setting up mikes. Use spaced pair of mikes a ways out. Sit in between them rotating my sitting position a bit this way or that and listening for the best sounding angle through the headphones. For actual recording have the headphones off. May do more than one take if not happy with the sound.
