No one went to a John Prine concert to see his guitar playing. Only the guitar players in the audience would notice that he's only using three chords.

If you're a guitar player first and foremost three chords are not going to cut it. Nor will playing in just one key.

When most of my guitar playing was jamming with blues progressions, one would call out a key and everyone would just jump into it.
