Default Percussive Fingerstyle instructional books

Hi,

I've played fingerstyle for 20+ years, went through a lot of Mark Hanson's stuff, but never had any percussive elements in it. I've tried to figured it out, but can't. I'm looking for some instructional material that may have simple songs to develop my right hand technique.

I'd love to learn to play with the snare hit on 2 and 4 like this:

Take a simple finger picking pattern that uses four thumb strokes in a bar, one on each beat, and replace the second and fourth of these with a tap on the strings.

That's not what I think of as "percussive fingerstyle" - or rather it's a very mild percussive addition to normal fingerstyle.

It's a technique developed from banjo clawhammer and frailing techniques, so it might be worth looking up some lessons on that (plenty of those on youtube, because it's considered a foundational technique).

John Martyn is the first guitarist I saw playing in this style, in the early 70s:

so lessons on his style might be useful:

Here's what I call "percussive fingerstyle":

Good luck finding lessons on that technique....

Yeah I’m not that interested in slap/tap. Mainly a percussive groove. I’ll look at that stuff, thanks!

Just put your favorite tunes on the old Victorola, pour your coffee (or beer) and practice hitting the table in rhythmic patterns. No guitar. IMO this kind of stuff is not rocket science and doesn't need a book or videos. Although I started as a drummer so YMMV...

This is basic enough to help me get started

I’ve gotten decent with this by learning to play arrangements with percussive elements from YouTube:

Here’s his easy version of Isn’t She Lovely that would be a good start to add the snare sound on the 2 and 4

And if you can handle long stretches, Joe Robinson does great renditions with tasteful percussive sprinkled in:

FWIW IMO that type of tapping is quite guitar centric and listening to it becomes old really fast. That said it's pretty easy to do so you should be able to
get it down soon.

Mike Dawes has a large instruction package that he sells. Apparently quite a lot of material on how to do his style. I'm thinking it might be available through his web site.

This is exactly what Paul Davids teaches in his Acoustic Adventure course (Fingerstyle module).
