SOLD! 1988 Martin J-65M! Now $2200 Shipped!
Up for your consideration is this fairly rare 1988 Martin J-65M. The guitar is in excellent condition for being 36 years old and sounds fantastic. Very clean, articulate notes with great sustain and way more bass response than anticipated. It does it all! Neck angle, intonation, and action is everything I could ask - 5/64" at the 12th fret.
According to Vintage Guitar, the Martin J-65 was made from 1985 to 1995. Jumbo, maple back and sides, gold tuners, scalloped bracing, ebony fingerboard, tortoise shell-style binding. A Martin Jumbo is 16" wide and 4-7/8' deep at lower bout. It was called the J-65M from 1985 to 1989 and then J-65 from 1990 on. As of 1995 there had been 391 made. Nut width: 1 11/16". This guitar remains in fantastic shape for the following reasons: Per the original owner, at some point between 2007-2009, it had a neck reset, new bone saddle & nut, fret dress, and set-up done by certified Martin luthier Rick Reiss (advancedguitarrepair) Then in June 2022, Luthier Brady Anderson (Olympia, WA) did another set-up, lowering the action and installing a K&K pure mini pickup. Per his assessment, there are no structural issues with the guitar. There is minimal fret wear present in the Cowboy chord position, a very few minor small dings on the top - none penetrate the finish. There is one area of belt rash on the back that I cannot capture in a picture. I call this “worming” which presents as minor impressions in the lacquer rather than scratches and are barely noticeable unless looking for them.) The top is flat with no belly or bowing and the neck angle is perfect. Minor, horizontal to the grain, finish checking is present on the back of the guitar. The strap button is not located where I would install it but, I never use a strap anyway. With the maple back/sides, paired with the "dreadnaught" depth and jumbo dimensions, the tone has a really nice low end - more than you would expect from a maple guitar. It projects well... really puts out the decibels! Also, very balanced and clear as you would expect from maple. Other than the pick-up install, saddle and nut, it has all the original parts." The original blue lined Canadian made hard-shell case is strong and sturdy - all latches work fine. $2400 (Now $2300) (Lets try $2200) (SOLD!!!) shipped within the lower 48 states. Payment via PayPal FF, Venmo, or USPS Money Order. Thanks in advance, but I am not interested in a trade. FYI: I am the third and fifth owner of this guitar. Yes, it’s good enough that I purchased it twice!
