Here is the HTC that describes what has duty fees, and what do not. Chapter 92 is musical instruments: https://hts.usitc.gov/current

According to the HTS MattV provided, an Emerald X20 falls under classification 9202.00.0000

It appears to me that the US is not an exempt country for duties and taxes, with the exception of countries that are covered under the NAFTA. Ireland is not one of those countries which leads me to believe that either Emerald pays the D&T for their customers and either rolls the cost into their retail price or eat the cost outright. They may have negotiated a contract with AN Post/ USPS of some kind too but I suspect that is not the case.

I'm personally interested in hearing your response K20C. Congrats on another fine Emerald!

I received two new Emeralds from Ireland last year - no customs fees. So either something new went into effect for 2018 or you got taken by your PO delivery guy. I'd definitely make a call.

I was charged 8.7% according to my paperwork. That’s consistent with the classification and rates set forth in Chapter 92. Very odd.

Waiting to hear from Sean which, of course, will be overnight.

Emerald’s FAQ states duties don’t apply to USA sales. But, until the FAQ were updated recently due to my input, they also (incorrectly) stated shipping was included in the quoted price.

Congrats on the arrival, Gary! No Customs duty or fees on the 2 Emeralds I bought, either.

The image of the guitar is in a lovely setting... of course, a few images of the guitar a bit closer up would nice, too.

Too late in the day for decent lighting, but here’s a quick and dirty side by side with a Martin Dreadnaught.

Mine is black, but there’s a large neon sign on the wall. Between the colors in that and this being an iPhone pic, the color in the guitar shifted somewhat.

Nice pairing Gary !

I have yet to touch an X20 , but am feeling an itch, looks surprisingly large, even next to the dread.

Just for comparison: Here’s how much smaller an X7 is in that company + GSMini

Ps Mine’s red, not so’s you’d notice at most angles !

I was wondering about all this shipping stuff as well... my X20 showed up a couple years ago at the NAMM show being carried by a certain guy who was my roomie and happened to be from Ireland . After hearing several good guitar players have at it and playing it several times meself I was some how played into buying the critter. Hey it was right there and his Irish eyes were smiling.
My other Emerald old school X7 and X10 woodies were shipped across the pond but don't remember a long wait... guess I better get a couple more and pay more attention.

When I bought my X7, Sean accidentally billed me in dollars, I was delighted as the price was a couple of hundred less than advertised for UK.

Sadly it was an error and I had to cough up the difference, there’s 20% VAT on all musical instruments (and most everything else) here.

You’d faint at the price of Martins and Taylors over here, we pay import duty AND VAT on them.

So , bad luck Yanks, but , you know , ,,, suck it up.

I'm interested to see what happens with this situation, as I should have a new X20 in my hands next week. I'd rather not have to pay any more than I already have for it!
