monel strings.with pickups.
I've tried the nickel strings on my resonator, and like the feel of them. I've been wondering about using them on an acoustic electric. I have guitars with under saddle transducers, K&K's, and one with a Lace Bronze sound hole pickup. Anyone tried the nickel or monel strings with an amplified guitar? If so, were there any downsides? Thanks in advance for any reply's.

Absolutely no negatives with my Anthem SL, my Fishman Matrix or my Baggs I-Beam. Sounds dang good to me.
I have no experience with magnetic sound hole pickups.

Nickel and monel are specially appropriate for magnetic PU's.
If you want some bronze quality in strings while adequate for mag PU, there is GHS White bronze (or other similar formulation). Bronze formulations gives uneven results on mag PU's. For your Lace, use only nickel, monel, or white bronze. |

I use Martin Retros on my Waterloo WL-14 w/ a Sunrise pickup, works great.
I'll be playing that guitar tonight at Fat Matt's Rib Shack. |

Oops, sorry, I read resonator and Lace, and immediately made the association and thought about the Lace Thinline mag PU... (of which I have 4 different iterations)
The Lace Bronze is voiced for... bronze strings (duh...), and so, no obligation of using nickel or monel (which would certainly be unbalanced, with emphasis on the wound strings) No problem with under saddle and K&K, tho, but what models do you have on your resonator ? |

No issues with retros on my Baggs M1A. Previously used them with a rare earth humbucker and a M80. No issues with soundhole pickups at all.

In answer to the question about the pickup in my resonator, I think it's by Fishman. It mount's to the screw in the center of the cone. On the underside. I'm not positive it's Fishman though. It does sound good. And evenly balanced. And thanks for the reply's. I think I'll get a few sets and experiment.

The consensus is they match up very well with guitars that have mahogany of any kind on them.

On acoustic guitar PUs that are internally balanced for bronze strings "retro" monels are probably ok, but for a magnetic PU designed for electric guitar strings they suffer from reduced response in the bass strings. I tried them on my Bartolini equipped jazz box with dissapointing results.

I'm using monel strings with a acoustic guitar that has a dual source magnetic pickup/internal mic configuration, and they sound fine. Very clear and reasonably consistent across the note spectrum when using the mag pickup, which is voiced for an acoustic guitar w/bronze strings. Definitely worth trying.
