I also own three guitars by Scott Ilott, a luthier from Comox on Vancouver Island. He doesn't advertise, has no website, doesn't place his guitars in stores. He earns his living as a high end cabinet maker/renovator, so that he can do what he likes with his guitars. I imagine he makes about 10-15 acoustic and electric guitars a year. I have attached photos of a redwood/myrtle 13-fret slothead L00 that he made for me 18 years ago. I also have a SJ EIR/bearclaw sitka, which I don't have with me at the moment.

I know this is an acoustic guitar forum, but I thought I would show you my Ilott telecaster: quilted maple top and tiger maple neck. The body is a single piece of alder from one of the local gulf islands. Custom made controls and a Charlie Christian pickup in the neck position. Sounds good hooked up to a Fender Princeton Reverb.
Love the Tele! Amazing!

Thanks for the comment on the Tele. It is an amazing instrument. I'm not an electric guitar guy by any means, but when I picked this up at Scott's house, I knew it was coming home with me. He's a great luthier. His electric builds are teles, strats, and les paul shapes. Always with high-end hand made electronics and beautiful woods. He doesn't build guitars for a living, and never advertises. He builds guitars on commission, and also builds lots just out of personal interest, to experiment with woods/body shapes/electronics, etc, so at any time he usually has 12-15 guitars in his place.

You can have all your uber expensive mahogany dreads - I'll take my Webber every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The body depth on these is 4.75", right?
I have a Larrivee L-05 with depth 4.5" that is tricky to play owing to the depth (4.25" I find perfect). Because the NL-00 is a smaller guitar, do you find the depth doesn't pose much issue?

I keep hearing great things about Halcyon. Really good things.
Northwood, too (also served under Larrivee).
Anybody compared Northwood to Halcyon?

I understand Webber are meant to be just fantastic (but no longer making guitars), and Boucher get a good name.

The Canadian builders are my absolute favourites.

I’ve a Morgan DM acquired last year. Bought through this forum, so unable to play it beforehand, but having played several Morgan’s at a now sadly defunct local dealer, I was familiar with the brand.
It’s a terrific instrument, the build quality is pretty much flawless, with a fantastic neck profile.
- I’d heartily recommend a test drive, I doubt too many folks would be disappointed, as a bonus, it’s built close to where I live !

The C-05 on the right is a Vancouver production guitar.

To say I'm enamored with it would be an understatement.

I have a guitar built by Michel Pellerin in Quebec. Pellerin Guitars. Michel is also a forum sponsor.

Northwood is brighter and fancier but either are excellent.

I have a Larrivee OM and a Northwood 000, and I love them both. But the Northwood is the best acoustic I own, especially for finger style. Extremely responsive, and the trebles sing like no other.

Nice to see this old thread revived and it gives me a chance to post about my Canadians...

I have: Boucher, Larrivee [2], Crosby, Halcyon, Webber, Thompson and Lone Tree. The two most recent custom builds are by Steve Doreen [Lone Tree] and Ed Bond [Halcyon - I now have 2 by Ed]

Not sure if that link will work but it is to FB post about the most recent Halcyon, a 000, 12 fret, Lutz/Walnut.

I’m still in line for my Halcyon to be built. It started as 18 month wait and now it’s been maybe 20. Might end up being 24 months before it’s done, which is fine with me. Problem is I now I have NO idea what I want him to build. To me his 12 fret 00s and 000s looks phenomenal , but so do his small jumbos.

Hey Rolly, I booked my build in 2020 and just got it! However the wait was well worth it.

You are comparing different sized guitars there. The bigger the body, the bigger the sound/volume in general.

Both of my Halcyons, in fact most of my guitars are 12 fret, 000's and I play mostly fingerstyle. For me, that is the best size. I asked Ed to build on the basis of a balanced sound and that is what I have. While this new one still needs time to settle in, it sounds great to my ears now and the neck is extremely easy to manage. Ed typically builds with a 'thin' neck and that works great for me. Ask him about what YOU want to hear from a guitar based on how you play it.

You won't be disappointed.
