I still remember the first time someone played Fillmore East for me, specifically Whipping Post.
It was a revelation, for sure. I came to the blues through the back door, but what an introduction! I still listen to that album. Eat a Peach is up there, too. I heard Blue Sky on the radio yesterday, and last night I had a dream I was hanging out with Dickie Betts. Don't ask me what we were doing or what he said...it was a dream

Back in the mid 70's I had tickets for the Allman Brothers "opening" for the Grateful Dead, supposed to be a 6 hour show at the University of Houston. Greg was killed and the ABB canceled the rest of the tour, the Dead played the full 6 hours, actually closer to 7 hours. Missed them by that much...

Filmore East is on my top 10 desert island discs.
I last saw them in '88 on the Shades of Two Worlds tour. A very young Warren Haynes (pre Gov't Mule) playing next to Dickey Betts. They had a 2nd keyboard player and a 3rd percussionist. I'm to lazy to look it up to see if Otell Burridge or Allen Woody was the bass player that year or the name of the keyboard player. I do remember it being a heck of great show.

I saw them at the Fillmore W. in San Francisco, early 1970. I was a freshman at UC Berkeley, and was writing a book about the Blues, for Berkeley Press.
I think it was probably the best show I've ever seen.

I saw them at the first Knebworth Festival in England in 1974 - they were the headline act finishing up an extraordinary day of music. Preceding them on the bill were the Doobie Brothers, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Van Morrison and Tim Buckley.
I have a prized copy of Eat A Peach, which I bought in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1972 - still one of my all-time favourites. It wasn't until many years later that I heard Fillmore East, which is one of the finest live concert recordings it's ever been my privilege to hear. Great, great band.

Derek is incredibly talented, so I encourage you to see him perform (even if it's on YouTube).
And if you happen to see him perform live, you may see him switch away from his usual Gibson SG and play Duane's 1957 Gibson LP Goldtop. The guitar's post-Duane story is quite interesting, and the current owners are loaning the guitar to players like Derek and Nels Cline, so it continues to get played and not just sitting behind museum glass.
