Default DIY Acoustic Panel take 2

Hey guys,

I've spent the past few weeks trying to track down the insulation that is used in most of the DIY Acoustic Panel videos, mainly owens corning 703, and rockwool 24. I have not had any luck, and have run out of leads and stores to call.

This seems to be the closest thing to what I need, I think:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/ROCKWOOL-SA...7-in-L/3394032

Can you guys verify this material is what I want? Seems to be 3" deep, I feel the material in the DIY vids mostly use 4". And if I want 2'x4' panels, I just use 1 and a half sheet of insulation? Can I use any remainder of this material for bass traps?

Thanks again.

It will work some, but it is not the same stuff as OC703 or Rockwool 60/80. The Safe'n'Sound is not as dense, and not as sound-absorbing. You'd need a lot more thickness using the Safe'n'Sound to get similar results. You can still make panels with it, and it will help, though (I have 6" thick Safe'n'Sound panels in the corners of my room as bass traps, diagonally with air space behind them).

Did you know you can mail order the material from the same places that make commercial panels? Acoustimac, ATS Acoustics and GIK all sell DIY stuff like OC703, Rockwool and other similar products. It may not be as cost effective after shipping cost as getting it locally, but if you want the denser pro stuff for thinner, more streamlined panels, that might be the way to go.

Have you inquired about having one of the big stores order the better stuff for you?

Some Do It Best Hardware can order in Roxul Rockboard 60 or 80. Some commercial insulation suppliers will sell to the public.

I've, each time, had to order it off the internet because it's never available locally.

I would go with the Safe N Sound. It works well, is easy to obtain, and is inexpensive.

If anyone would do a cursory look in the Denver area for acceptable and available material, I would promise to pay it forward somehow...

I know there's a place in Fort Collins, cuz I got some OC703 there. One package minimum (12 2" batts ran just under $200 IIRC). PM me for details if you really can't find it in Denver metro at smaller amounts.
