Default My 9 Volt battery keeps dying

Hi Everyone,

Why does my 9 volt battery keep dying on my LR Baggs system for my Cargo guitar? Thanks for your help. Do I need to unplug it from the amp when not in use?

Yes, you need to unplug when not using the pickup. Most of these are activated anytime a plug is in.

Hi K

When you plug the cable into the guitar, it turns on the electronics, which stays on till unplugged.

This. As long as there is a cord plugged into the guitar
it's draining the battery.

Don't be too hard on yourself - but DO read the instruction manual (either in hand or on line).

I have one guitar where the 9V battery gets drained even when unplugged; I assume there is a wiring problem at the jack. Never got around to having it checked out, I just pull the battery when not using the guitar...
So if you still have a problem with a dead battery even when unplugging it, have the jack wiring checked out.

I have this problem with my new Taylor guitar. Even with the chord unplugged, it runs the batter down in just a couple of weeks. Guess I'll have to leave the battery out altogether until I want to play through the port.

I had a friend who didn't even know his system had a battery, until it was dead right before a performance. He was having issues, and you could practically see the light bulb over his head go off when I said, "Did you check the battery?" So you're already one step ahead!

@OP - pardon my potentially stupid question but I just want to double double check what you mean, are you suggesting that you are going to unplug the guitar from the amp? (I think this is what you're saying and I think so does everybody else) or are you suggesting you'll unplug the battery from the preamp?

Just covering all bases.

Just because I think there may be some confusion... to switch off the pickup, you must unplug the guitar cable from the jack on the end of the guitar.

The end jack essentially has a switch in it that turns the pickup "ON" when you insert a guitar cable. Remove the cable, and the pickup is switched off and shouldn't be using any battery. The other end of the cable that goes into the amp is irrelevant.

Generally that's a good idea anyway. Batteries can leak and destroy your electronics if left too long... don't ask how I discovered that fun fact!

I wonder how long a 9V battery can survive if the cable keep plugging it? A week?
