Specific cheap amp tone... What would I need?
In the song below, I like that old cheap amp tone that this guy has going on. What would I need to get this tone? It has a very "old blues" feel to it. Can this be replicated through a modern amp or Amplitube or a specific pedal combo?

That whole mix sounds like it was done to emulate an old AM radio sound, with a heavy cut of bass and treble. That part will be hard to replicate.
The growly parts sound Bassman like, but the clean doesn't have that chime. I don't quite hear Vox either, not enough upper midrange. Maybe a smaller Fender tweed amp like a Deluxe on the Normal channel, or something a little out of the ordinary like an Orange?

Leads on the left sound like either a single-ended class-A amp like a Champ or better a Gretsch 6150 and played with a hollow body with P-90 pickups. You might get close with a tweed Deluxe but it might have too much sustain. The rhythm on the right does indeed sound more like a Vox with its low negative feedback and possibly a Tele.

Very cool tune, glad you posted it, never heard of these guys before. Tune sounds like key of G played with a Bb/D over G to a Eb/G over C to a D F# C shell chord on the 5th fret. Played with a thumb for the G and C bass. two fingers on the over notes. Very cool.

Thanks guys! So, I was thinking this tone is meant to imitate a "cheap" amp like you might have heard some blues guy playing on a street corner back in the 60s or 70s, maybe like a pignose amp or something similar. You guys are saying this is probably a processed tone then?

Well, many amp tones on records are processed, sometimes to the point they don't sound much like the original at all. EQ, compression (full range or multiband), reverb, and so on. This whole song is mixed to sound very low fidelity, which makes pinpointing a make and model even harder. I think what we're saying is that it's a simple, small amp with a fair bit of studio "stuff" done to the sound to help it fit the mix.
The distorted tone does bear a resemblance to some of Keith Richards' sound, and he's a fan of small tweeds like the Champ in the studio. That sound is mostly power amp distortion from being cranked up loud.

I should have stipulated that I don't mind processing in some way to get the sound. I'm not necessarily looking for a "live" application of that tone, just recordings.

I was able to get pretty dang close tonight. It took a little time to dial it in, but I'm pretty happy with the results. I'm not a great player, but I may post up a video or sound file and let you judge if it's in the ballpark.
