Most people spend too much time doing their business in the bathroom with their smartphones... Steve and Ryan do their business while doing their business.

Default First Clear Coat

Tony Ferguson sent Steve some photos of the body with its fist clear coat applied in his spray booth. The Macassar Ebony rosette and Zebrawood purflings can be seen against the Red Spruce top.

The beauty of the figured Macassar Ebony heartwood and contrasting sapwood even through the reflections of his spray booth.

Stunning guitar!, that zebrawood purfling is a great look, and the back and sides, amazing. I am interested in the choice of Lacquer for the neck while the body is a polyester finish, why the lacquer on the neck, do you prefer the feel of lacquer to polyester?

Thanks Bill…. Steve will obviously chime in later, but I believe that his rationale is:

1) Steve is set up to easily finish the neck with nitro in his shop and can create satin finish in areas;
2) The neck being a physical wear area, is more easily repairable with nitro than with catalyzed polyurethane and
3) Economics of transport plus Tony's finishing services vs. the benefit are are not the same for the neck as it is with the body.

Yep, that pretty well sums up my thinking. Thanks Bob! I could add that I do NOT want to spray that catalyzed urethane. Lacquer is bad enough.

Hey Vance, thanks for the kind word. If your ears were burning this weekend, it might have been that we were singing a number of your songs (with floods of good memories I should add).

Default Getting Ready for the Body

Steve received notification from Tony Ferguson that the finished body should arrive back to the Nacogdoches Mothership tomorrow. The neck has been drying in their shop for 6 weeks now and is ready to finish.

Here is the neck now leveled and ready to be buffed. The heel cap was buffed as a test, and he liked the result so the back overlay will be buffed as well.

Body tomorrow…

Default Box Returns to the Mothership

The body finished in catalyzed polyurethane by Tony Ferguson returned by Fedex to Steve’s Nacogdoches, TX shop today.

The Randy Lucas Adirondack Spruce top is presenting a lot of medullary for a Red Spruce sound board. The Macassar Ebony rosette and Zebrawood purflings accent it nicely.

The finish is so shiny and reflective that it is difficult to see the figure in the Macassar Ebony back and sides.

Here is the Macassar Ebony heartwood - sapwood peghead overlay. Steve has taken it to about 3600 micromesh at this point and has a ways to go before taking it to the buffing wheel.

Default Bridge on…

Here is a photo of Steve cutting free the masking tape used during the finishing process by tracing around the Brazilian Rosewood belly bridge w/ a scalpel.

He now removes the masking tape using a spatula to free up the unfinished Red Spruce top that will lie beneath the bridge in preparation for gluing it on.

Bridge on…
