Default Any one else late to the party?

The thread on what songs influenced your musical journey got me to thinking.

Has anyone else discovered a musician or a band long after they had become famous? My example. In the last couple years I've become a huge fan of the music of Chris de Burgh. He's not really that big here in the United States and other than his song Lady in Red, (which I actually forgot who the artist was who did that song) I really didn't know who he was.

I discovered him via YouTube a couple of years ago through their algorithms, he was recommended to me. I have since learned he has a big following in other parts of the world and many other hits.

Since then have become a big fan and I'm progressing through a lot of his music on the guitar learning to play it.

Another artist I discovered was Albert Hammond. He had one big hit with a 70 song "It Never Rains In Southern California", but I since discovered that he had written or co-written many big popular hits.

So is anyone else discovered an artist who had been around a long time that you just never heard of or were unfamiliar with?

Eagles, CSN, and Dan Fogelberg. I was big into Country while they were on the top of Rock.

I only started listening to John Prine when I began to take songwriting seriously about four years ago.

The Seekers, an Australian folk group, We Five, an American one hit wonder from the States, and Gordon Lightfoot.

And on the rock side, REM. I fell in love with the Rickenbacker sound in the 80’s, but somehow missed them.

In my examples, I think that famous might also be thought of as well-regarded and reasonably well-known within certain genres.

I somehow had never listened to Andy Timmons until a couple of years ago, a huge miss for me. The Reggie's recording of Electric Gypsy by ATB on You Tube just froze me in the chair for too many listens to count. Way too many years passed before discovering my favorite electric player, but better late than never.

Even though I did listen to both Badlands albums and Junkyard at the fading of metal, I completely missed Steelheart until about a year back. In the same vain with all the 70's rock, I knew of Funkadelic/Parliament but had never actually listened to the song Maggot Brain. I now have the proper appreciation for Eddie Hazel.

Best,

Mac

I'd have to add those to my list. In the 1990s I went back and began listening to music I ignored when they were first popular. These were Eagles, CSN, Dan Fogelberg, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac.

I heard Seldom Scene's version of "Wait a Minute" on the radio and was floored, never had heard of them.

Looked into the band and turns out they had released dozens of albums.

Eric Taylor. Passed on an opportunity to see him at a house concert, later found out how good he was

Chuck Pyle. Better late than never.
