Curmu8dgeionly ? you want it?

I'm typing whilst I'm waiting for my neighbour to finish mowing his lawn while I'm trying to record! "GET OFF YOUR LAWN!!!"
What was you damfool question again ? Oh yeah, well it entirely depends on what you use your instruments for !

In the '70sv I played in bluegrass bands and I NEEDED one dreadnought (D35) a mandolin, and a dobro.

Later when I became a solo performer I needed more - Add one 12 string to change the dynamics of my act.

Maybe you need to carry a 2nd dread- just in case.

Wanna play a little slide blues ? Get a reso.

Wanna stay at home and noodle on the couch? Well a dreadnought is too big, get a 00 or 000 max.

Intricate fingerstyle ? exchange the dreads for something more appropriate - for me the 00 and/or the 000 work perfectly esp if they are 12 fretters - designed for the job.

Want a shorter scale - replace the dreads with a jumbo.

Right next question....(sounds off) - Haven't you finished mowing yet Simon?" )

Actually it's more than 3

1) Tele Style guitar
2) Strat Style guitar SSS or SSH
3) LP Style guitar
4) 335 Style guitar
5) Jr/Special Style w/ P-90's
6) Martin Style D-28/D-18
7) Gibson Style J-45
8) Precision Style Bass

I think if you have a good quality example of all of the 8 above, then you have just about all the basses covered.

This list is what you'd most likely need in a home studio to cover just about every popular tone you might need.

A nice Dread, OM, and a beater you can take to the beach bonfire and not worry about the salt water spraying your guitar.

The three that I think of-

*Martin 18 series Guitar. Whatever size fits yer fancy.

*Gibson J45 or maybe a LG2 or L00 ifn you've got shoulder issues like me... with a nice classic Gibson sunburst of course.

*Fender Telecaster- I've been dabbling a bit off and on now with electric and it is all fun- But there is something special about a nice Tele and quality Fender amp- sweetness!

These are guitars that seem to really consistently deliver the goods- for me anyway

howzaboutyou!?

madhat.
I've come around to the thinking that good utilitarian guitars for my purposes are dependent on wood/shape rather than brand, not that the proposed Martins and Gibsons wouldn't be great choices. So I always have at least one nice spruce/rosewood and spruce/mahogany guitar on hand. An all mahogany is always a nice addition, and a spruce/maple guitar could round it out.

All that said, I've left out cedar top, resonator, nylon, tenor, bass, baritone, guitjo, etc, any of which might be a necessity to certain folks at certain times.

This might have worked better if the title had been “3 Guitars Every ______ Player Should Have”. If I insert Fingerstyle for me.

1. German or Adi/EIR 000/OM
2. German or Adi/Koa 000/OM
3. German or Adi/Mahogany 000/OM

All of the above in 12 fret/short scale versions, Florentine cutaways. Sonically you’ll have three very nice flavors to work with.

Every guitar player should own the guitars that fit their ears and hands that best gives them the most musical satisfaction so I think that leaves the field wide open. I would encourage players to try just for the fun of it:
- A deep body grand concert
- Comparing a D18 with a J45
- Playing an electric guitar if you only play acoustic and playing an acoustic if you only play electrics.
Best,
Jayne

I've got at least 7 covered from my list.

I'm still looking for the perfect J-45.

Eventually I'll find THE J-45, and I'll be a "Happy Camper".

Compressed, yes, but that's sort of the opposite of "lush," isn't it?

Everyone has different likes and dislikes. So I will keep it general.

A 6 string acoustic. Brand and size is up to you. Mine is a Takamine GD93.

A 12 string, acoustic or electric. Again for me it's a Takamine. A GJ72CE.

An electric, again, what ever suits you. For me it's the Gibson SG I have had since grade school.

Now I would really like to throw a Gibson Dove into the mix. The only time it would leave the house is when I want to show off.

I’ll go more general than the OP.
1. A good six string in a size that fits you.
2. A good 12-string.
3. A good “collapsible” travel guitar.
3E. If I ever go electric, I want a good jazz box that feels “familiar”.
As the first curmudgeon said, I’ve played for a long time.
Never owned a Martin...they don’t blow my skirt up.
Never owned a Gibson, when I was poor I couldn’t afford one. Now that I can afford one, I can’t see spending that amount on a guitar.

With you on this, Frank. Anyone who says they don't need a 12 string has obviously never played the RIGHT 12 string. I currently own three and can now never see myself without at least one.

Default Brand Schmand...

Brands aside, I think anyone interested in exploring the range of style offered by guitars:

1.A dreadnought. Invites bluesgrass, hard rhythms, rock, playing in a combo or band.

2. An OM/OO. A smaller guitar that invites finger style work, soloing.

3. An electric, just to appreciate the difference in feel and utility.

3A. A classical. Not for everyone, but another basic direction to go.
