Default larrivee d-03bw-WHAT IS BLACK WOOD?

Okay, I'm stumped (no pun intended)...can someone tell me more about black wood? Ever play it? where's it from?

These are the woods that are offered from the website. As you can see, the only wood that could be considered "black wood" would be the Ebony. The model you mention is not listed on the Larrivee webite. Could be a model that's not in production anymore.

It's Acacia melanoxylon. It is more commonly called Australian Blackwood or sometimes Tasmanian Blackwood. The wood is related to koa (Acacia koa), though not usually as nicely figured and sounding kind of between koa and mahogany. Most people would mistake it for koa if they saw it. Here is what a piece of Acacia melanoxylon looks like.

I'd imagine that sounds quite nice.

Although, nothing beats a all koa for sound, well, short of a maple, but they are just the opposite. Mellow vs perky.

What I am talking about? I have no idea.

Koa can be perky if it has an Engelmann top and slightly worn strings. Not as perky as maple, but moderately perky.
