Carbon Fiber Piano by Phoenix
Phoenix pianos in the U.K. apparently makes a carbon fiber Piano called the Carbiano:
https://www.phoenixpianos.co.uk/phoenix-carbiano/ Interesting article about their work here: https://pianoaddict.com/2016/04/pian...-carbon-fibre/ They are 3D printing better quality hammers and it's interesting that they mention developing a string that holds tuning better with near-zero expansion. I wonder if that's the next generation of guitar strings... strings that stay in tune more precisely because of the materials. JR

The Phoenix Carbiano sounds great in the videos--I detect an effortlessness in playing--and would offer another tonal option for major concert halls and renowned pianists to consider.

Sooooooooooo cool. As a former piano tuner and mover, that weight reduction sounds amazing.

Cool! Finally! Makes me want to play piano...hope they are at NAMM....
Wonder if they have what some described as RainSong's piano chime sound ...nawwww And then that whole laminate thing..a Spalted Chen Chen piano to match one of my X10s... Hmmmm A choice of hard shell case or gig bag! Custom tuners Stage 3 pickup system.... Can leave it in the trunk A red one would be cool too Foldable Can use as a boat in an emergency ... with CF guitar as paddle of course

Piano Carbonera played at your table while eating spaghetti carbonera.
My Roland V-Grand weighs 375 lbs. If Roland were to adopt this piano technology for another V-Grand, my next piano (should the V-Grand ever die) could be easily movable by one person. This is the technology that could threaten piano movers' careers. Tony

I have played with and on this piano. I'm a piano technician. I lifted the tail to see how heavy it was. I inadvertently (from habit) gave it a heave and nearly threw it up to the ceiling! It's very light.
The sound wasn't there when I tried it. Work in progress. I need to add that it's not the hammers that are being 3d printed but some parts of the hammer mechanism. The hammers are still felt, as always. Very interesting project which has been going on for a good few years now. He's an interesting man with innovative ideas. The string development hasn't happened as far as I know. Possibly the materials that don't expand too much don't sound much either? Has anyone with a CF guitar noticed deterioration from sun damage? That's very interesting. And if you think about it strings evolved over the years as materials and material processing advancements were made.
And, back when, the soundboards were cast metal because that was the strongest manufacturable material on Earth. That's not true now, so CF makes so much sense. So it makes sense that strings will evolve as well, perhaps into something completely different.

I'm not sure how piano strings have changed over the years, but guitar strings have been going through some remarkable developments. Is it possible that the new pianos will be adopting guitar string advancements?

Nick, thank you for sharing your firsthand experience with this instrument. What they are doing with carbon fiber and 3D printing in the mechanism is something that could translate into upgrades for existing instruments to improve their durability and playability. I hope they continue development.
You may want to start a new thread with your question about CF guitar deterioration from sun damage. I've never noticed anything but I haven't played in the sun too much. There may be some UV stabilizers in the epoxy that they use. JR

I have Roland LX-17 upright piano that I purchased for my daughter. That thing is pretty heavy in its own right to move around when you need to. Can definitely see the carbon appeal...neat idea...who knew...certainly not me...
