Bone for my Martin
Thinking about taking the ole D-42 in for a bone saddle and nut upgrade. Any thoughts ?

I've got bone saddles on my OM-21 and my 614. I'd highly recommend it. There was a somewhat lengthy post about this recently, and opinions did vary a bit. That said, to my ear, the bone provides much more sustain and gives the guitar more of a "bell like" tone (especially so on my 614).

Many folks on the Martin forum treat boning as a "required" upgrade. Many good stories, opinions, and info over there. Seems that most of them install their own saddles and buy them from this guy...
http://www.maurysmusic.com/ Maury is a UMGF regular and gives a discount to forum members. I've heard nothing but good things about his products. Bone for my HD-28 is on my "to do" list.

I will be boning my D-15 as soon as I can get the 20.00. Darn Bills!

I had Bone in my D-28 and it sounded good. I took it out to sand it down some and went a little too far I had to put the original Micarta saddle back in and it sounded the same to me.

I had a compensated bone saddle put in my 16 Series Martin when I had a setup done in March and it sounds great. I certainly wouldn't call the sound 'bell-like' or bright but it's definitely more clear than it was before. It's still a very mellow guitar that sounds smooth (much quieter than my Taylor) when fingerpicked but growls when strummed hard.
There was no question that the bone seriously improved the sound of my Martin.
