Talkin' In Your Sleep by Gordon Lightfoot (cover)
I have always loved this song, sad as it is, but it has always seemed unfinished to me. It finally dawned on me that maybe that's the way Gordon Lightfoot wanted it -- to reinforce the shock factor of finding this betrayal out in the night and now, not knowing where things are going. My wife, when I played this for her before recording it, reacted that it sounded like he wrote the song right after he woke up and then just kept repeating himself, just like we do when we are in shock. And the bridge in the song is so dramatic... The guitar is a 2018 Martin D-45, which I thought sounds (and looks) really lovely on this song. But the Olson trebles didn't show up as much as I would have liked, so then I tried my Sheppard GA. It sounded great on this song, so I intended to use it. But then when I played this song for my wife in the house, I used the D-45 because that guitar usually lives in the house. It sounded so good on the D-45 that I just took the D-45 up to my studio and used it for the recording. So that's the story behind the guitars. Hi Glenn!! Loved the song and the job you did with it!! Wow, that bridge really spoke to me! The melody in there hits some amazing notes that elevate the whole thing to a wonderful complexity. I could listen to how that changes up all day......

But it's that bridge that has different changes in it -- he leans over to comfort her in the night and then -- wham! -- she lets out a secret from her sleep talking that he was not supposed to know, something that has just broken his heart. It's left unsaid, but it's in those chord changes. (F65-) I heard you softly (C9+/E) whisper (F65-) I reached out to (E) hold you (E/F#) near (E/G#) me (Am) Then from your (C/G) lips there (F) came that (C/E) secret (F) I was (C/E) not supposed to (Gsus4) know (G) I'm glad you mentioned the bridge, Fred. To me, that was huge, what made the song really touching. And I imagine his reaction was complicated by his own behavior out on the road in those days.
