GoFundMe
Does anyone here have experience with GoFundMe? A friend of mine set up an account for funding for his daughter who has brain cancer. If they don't meet their goal, do they still get the money that has been donated?

I suggest reading the fine print and realize the percentage they keep if nothing else.
Groups I volunteer in use the PayPal for nonprofits rate, and at times a trust department in a financial organization will donate time and infrastructure for free. Local groups that get the accounting and collection donated can still broadcast that via social media. Facebook ads are inexpensive.

I give at the office to the American Red Cross, which I trust.
I never give elsewhere. I won't take a chance of being duped as a gullible sucker giving to a "cause" or "charity" that's not honorable, or one that may be skimming off the top. IMO the ease of the Internet makes scams more likely, not less. gofundme dot com? Really? Pffff! |

Per the gofundme website, it looks like you get the donations even if you don't reach the goal. We donate to various causes through GoFundMe pretty regularly but have not set one up on our own.

Gofundme is a safe platform for your friend's fundraiser. The site requests an additional payment on top of your donation, which goes to their costs, but contributors can modify or remove that part of the donation without any effect on their contribution. I hope your friend's child gets the treatment he/she needs, and Gofundme helps with any financial needs the family may need, as well.

I'd give them money in person or mail them a check/money order.
That's just me though. |
