Jason Isbell's "Something More Than Free" Vid and Tab
A great video here of Jason talking about how he wrote "Something More Than Free" the title track from his latest record.
Jason's discussion from 0:00 to 2:00...song starts at 2:00. I was so taken by the story behind this song and this solo acoustic version of it, I tabbed it out. Here it is. Verse 1: (G5)When I get home from work I’ll (Cadd9) call up all (G5) my friends And we’ll (G/F#) go (Emin7) bust up someth (Cadd9)ing beautiful (G5)We’ll have to build again (G5)When I get home from work I’ll (Cadd9) wrestle off my (G5)clothes And (G/F#) leave ‘em ri(Emin7)ght inside the (Cadd9) front door Cause (G5) nobody’s home to know Pre-chorus: You see (D) a hammer finds a nail And a (Cadd9) freight train needs the (G5)rails And I’m (D) doin what I’m on this earth (Am) to do Chorus: And I don’t (Emin) think on (D) why I’m here where it hurts(Cadd9) I’m just lucky to have the (Emin7) work(D) (Cadd9) Sunday (Emin7) morning I’m too tired (D) to go to ch(Cadd9)urch But I thank God for the (Emin7) work(D) (Cadd9) And I thank God for the work(G) (Gsus) Verse2: (G5)When I get my reward My (Cadd9) work will all (G5) be done And I will (Emin7) sit back in (Cadd9) my chair beside (G5)The Father and the Son (G5)No more holes to fill And (Cadd9) no more rocks to (G5)break And (G/F#) no more(Emin7) loading boxes on (Cadd9) to trucks (G5)For someone else’s sake Pre chorus: (D)Cause a hammer needs a nail And the (Cadd9) poor man’s up for sale(G5) Guess I’m (D) doing what I’m on this earth to do(Am) Chorus: And I don’t (Emin7) think on (D)why I’m here where it hurts(Cadd9) I’m just lucky to have the (Emin7) work(D) (Cadd9) Every (Emin7) night I dream I’m (D) drowning in the dirt (Cadd9) But I thank God for the (Emin7) work(D) (Cadd9) Bridge: And the day will (D/A) come When I’ll find a (C/G) reason And somebody (D/G) proud to love a man like (C/G)me My back (D/A) is numb My hands are (C/G) freezing What I’m (D/A) working for is something more than (C/G)free Chorus: And I don’t (Emin7) think on (D)why I’m here where it hurts(Cadd9) I’m just lucky to have the (Emin7) work(D) (Cadd9) Sunday (Emin7) morning I’m too tired (D)to go to ch(Cadd9)urch But I thank God for the (Emin7) work(D) (Cadd9) And I thank God for the work(G) (Gsus)

Thanks for the link and the chords. I got to meet Jason when he played at Huntsville, a few months ago, opening for John Prine. In addition to having a wealth of talent, he's also a real nice guy.

Well done!
Could you possibly tab-out another of his songs? I would love to learn to play "Elephant". Do you know that one? Thanks |

Thanks. There's a pretty good tab that has been circulating. Go here http://www.e-chords.com/chords/jason-isbell/elephant Meanwhile have you seen the Sirius XM solo performance? You can easily follow the left hand movements. I think the hammer for each verse line is Open E, 3rd fret E, Open A And the run down for the chorus is 3rd Fret E, 2nd E, Open E all relative to the capo. It's been a while since I've played that song, it's not that difficult. An amazing song...
