Default What monitors are you using?

I'm going to add a monitor section (audio, not visual) to the Masterlist, so please list what you're using and if you're familiar with some other pair from having used them in the past, feel free to list them as well.

I use the KRK Rokit 5 monitors and have been using them since around 2008. I did a little shoot out at GC and they came out on top in my price range.

I am using Neumann KH 120A 5.25" monitors. They are super clean and very accurate.

For solo guitar I used monitors for a while but went back to Grado 225 headphones to evaluate things.

JBL LSR305's powered monitors since 2014.
Prior to the JBL's I was using a pair of Yorkville YSM1i Passive monitors driven by an Alesis RA-100 Reference amp.

Equator Audio D-5. A small little box with the best midrange I've ever heard on any small monitor. I call it 'surgical midrange.'

No longer available, the company just drifted away.

Smile Monitors

I use a pair of Ryan S610's driven by a Bryston BP26/MPS2 preamp, Bryston 2.5BSST2 power amp, and Bryston BDA-2 DAC. I supplement the very low bass with a Velodyne Optimum 12 subwoofer (crossed over at 60 hz).

The Ryan's are a recent purchase, and are one of the best speakers I have ever listened to. I worked in a high end hifi shop for seven years and have auditioned lots of more expensive speakers.

https://ryanspeakers.com/Products/Pr...ucts/S610.html

I believe the current price is $4,000 per pair.

Thanks for initiating and maintaining the master list Jim. I know it's a lot of work, and I appreciate it. It is very helpful.

I went with Eris monitors. The little 3.5 pair uses the same tweeter as the next two sizes up, but only has a 3.5” woofer. So I supplemented them with an 8” Sub8 woofer, with a generous crossover that only asks the 3.5s to do what they can do well.

All made by Presonus. Total price, $300, about the same as the Eris 5 pair with 5” woofers.

M040. They are wonderful monitors for a home studio unfortunately they have been discontinued. No doubt Genelec offers something similar and equally good.
