Default Why do portrait photos get turned sideways

when posted here? I see it happening to myself and a lot of other posters. The photo I've attached is a portrait orientated photo, yet it gets turned sideways after posting here.

There's metadata information associated with the image you
posted that describes its width and height (600 x 284) ...

Books have been written on what I don't know about computers, but I've mastered the art of correcting sideways photographs. It's not rocket science, but it's not nothing. When you're 72 and your body plays a daily game of Whack-a-Mole, you have to grab at whatever brass ring life serves up...

Why? I believe computers are "told" to expect landscape format and try to make one size fit all. Some of the places I post photos turn everything into landscape, whether I want it that way or not. Frustrating to do your best to take a good photos and have your efforts wrecked automatically.n Some cameras make the same assumption.

And of course there are lazy photographers who could do something about it if they paid attention or took the time.

There's metadata associated with (most) photos. When the cordoba
picture was first posted sideways, the width was 600 and the height was
284. After it got "fixed", the size related metadata was swapped.

There's probably an image viewing program on your computer that
will show you the metadata in images.

Often "smart" cameras even insert GPS coordinate metadata into
images. People sometimes unknowingly post pictures to the Internet
with way more information in them than they'd like...
