Custom Kit?
Hi All,
I am thinking of making an acoustic guitar. I have plans for a 3/4 instrument with a 21.375 scale length that I would like to modify to become a 4 string (steel string) guitar with a 1.5 nut width. To me a from scratch build is over my head but I might be able to have a successful build if I could have a pro provide me with a kit. Bending the sides, etc. Any thoughts or suggestions? Grandpa G |

Hi,
So I'm a new builder myself and may have some insight. First.... a kit build is a GREAT idea for a first guitar. You can get kits from Stewmac.com or Martin kits from lots of places. I've done one of each of those kits and what I learned is while the Martin kit is an easier build because more of it is done for you in the kit. In both situations the sides are bent too and back are rough cut and thicknessed. Don't they that discourage you though there is a LOT of work left to do. I would also recommend building something as standard as possible for the first build. Just my 2 cents Good luck!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Why build? You're describing a tenor guitar and you can buy one for a fairly low cost that will probably be better than first build. Factor in labor and you can probably buy a very good vintage tenor.

The 1.125 - 1.25 nut width and 23" scale is a deal breaker for the tenor option for me.

Neither John Hall nor Kenneth Michael offer tenor guitar kits as far as I am aware.

The whole point of a kit build is that the labor isn't factored in ... it's a spare time, leisure time pursuit that takes as long as it takes.
