Silvertone 1471 Amp
I've only the chassis to the amp, both the cab and speaker were ruined in a basement flooding. I'm building a cab for it and what with its output 5w at 4kohm, it isn't a heavy hitter, but it sure sounded sweet so log ago when it was complete. We used to mike it back in the day, but those days are past, volume is not an issue. I've read that an 8" Jensen CR8 @ 4kohm 25w will far outperform a Jensen 6" MOD 6-15 15w @ 4kohm, at least at low freq anyway. Has anyone any experience with low power amps and speaker retrofits? Oh, let me add it did initially come with a 6" Jensen. I'm looking to get that sound back. Any suggestions?

You might consult someone like Mojotone or other vintage amp places like Skips Amps in Sacramento CA. I have a soft spot for those odd-ball old tube amps.

You probably want to look at Weber speakers before making a final decision. Could be your best bet for a speaker as close as possible to the original sound (don't ask me which one though...).

I have owned a few Silvertones through the years and the 1471 is a pretty sweet small amp. I would go with the C8R - does everything pretty well. An alnico would be my first choice if price wasn't an issue though. They get crunchy quick - great for blue harp but maybe too dirty for guitar.

Wow..
My first amp was a Silvertone 1481, still have it and it still works. Looks like the 1471 and 1481 were basically the same amp. This link will eventually lead you to the schematics of both amps. Just click on the picture of the amp. Interesting gallery of pictures for both amps too. http://silvertoneworld.net/amplifier...1/1471_81.html

i have the 1482 and it is a great amp.
i believe it will boil down to what you want it to do. if you are looking to get close to its original sound, you'll need to get a similar speaker. weber speakers make some great and not too expensive small speakers. i bought a 10" weber for my gibson ga5t and it sounds great. if you are wanting to make it sound bigger, go for a 10" or 12". play music!

Good advise all, thank you. I'm getting that it's not absolutely necessary to refit w/ a "6 speaker to specifically retain the original vibe.

Yeah, a larger speaker will keep the tone but give you much better low end and more perceived volume as well. A larger and/or deeper cabinet will also increase bass response. IMO small amps sound very round and punchy w/10's in 'em.
