Default Need Opinions on Binding Choice.

Hello all,

I am going to build another uke in the near future and wanted to get opinions on binding choice.

It will be an all mahogany body and neck. I want to bind the body this time. My first uke from Stew Mac is not bound.

I was thinking curly maple, but wasn't sure how that would look. What other woods would look nice with the mahogany? I want to do wood, not plastic.

Thanks,
Erik

I had a Larrivee OM, mahagony back/sides, bound in Maple. Since Larrivee mahagony is so much lighter than, let's say, Martin mahagony, the maple looked great. If the hog were to be darker - like Martins are, then I'm not certain.

The wood in the Stew Mac kits is pretty red with clear finish. Looking at their catalog, I like the bloodwood binding. That might be pretty nice with the b/w/b edge.

Take a look at some mahogany ukes and see what you like.

For example:

My personal favorite is rosewood binding. Subtle low-contrast. Martin used rosewood binding in the 1920's.

Edit: here's curly maple.
