I really like the Fretboard extension … sort of swerving away from the sound hole. Fret markers…perfect!!

Default Headstock

We have worked out the headstock which is a slot head. It will have the previously shown Scheller tuners and the overlay will be African Blackwood to go with the binding and other trim. Here is a mock up:

The truss rod cover will be Bocote to go with the fretboard and there will be a Green Turquoise inlay bound with purfling.

Very tasty ! Like the minimized approach with ‚only‘ 3 fretmarkers.. short style as it would be called elsewhere.. goes nicely with the rosette and the green accent / inlay on the headstock.. which is a slothead .. and I like those !
This will be tonally and aesthetically very pleasing
..to my taste of course

Mine too! We're going for a minimalist/clean look on things, so we don't overshadow the woods. I never would have thought green turquoise was in my color palate, but that's where the real artist steps in and surprises you with something you have never considered!! In the end, I think the green turquoise doesn't overwhelm the overall esthetic but brings out the beauty of the woods even more...

This is coming together very nicely for us. I completely agree that the green turquoise is a wonderful compliment to the wood tones. Judging by the tap tone of the closed up body I have high expectations for the responsiveness and tone of this guitar.

That's a very tasty combination of hues. The bicote looks great with the blackwood. My favorite part is the truss rod cover that extends the fingerboard into the peghead. That's very satisfying.

So is the curve of the headstock a mirror of the end of the fretboard?

Suppose the trussrod cover was the width of the nut and mirrored the top of the headstock?

Interesting, but I think it would take away from the clean headstock too much and the centerpiece of the headstock-the diamond turquoise…and I’m also not a fan of continuing the fretboard wood to include the headstock…I think it’s too busy…nice idea though…we’ll see what the master luthier says!!

Thanks for the suggestion! I take pride in my attempts to deep dive into every detail of the guitars I design and build whether it is for looks, playability, provenance, structure and especially tone. Sometimes I have biases that get in the way of exploring all the options and I just go with assumptions.

That is how I was with sound ports, I didn't like them, didn't offer them, didn't think about them. I had that moment where I actually saw value in them (besides for getting picks out) and now they are a regular part of many of the guitars I build.

So I guess I'm saying that 20 years ago I made two truss rod designs and never really thought about them again. I look at some of the large truss rod covers on Rickenbacker, Ibanez and some Gibson guitars and it does show there is much more design room to ponder here. Thanks for that.

We're pretty committed on the look of this guitar but I'm thinking there are new opportunities for future guitars.

You sure did that with the guitar you made for me. Except for the screw, no one can tell it's there. My aesthetic feeling is first to have things match. And when that is not possible, to have them contrast.
