There seemed to be some buzz here about the Minstrel model (LG-2 copy) a few years back but haven’t heard much lately.

Sold one of the Minstrels and bought an incredible Troubadour. Serial #3. What a great guitar. Magnificent! Daniel Roberts is a master luthier. Up there with Kevin Ryan, Traugott, Kim Walker, John Slobod, etc. This is an original design that works brilliantly. I urge everyone to try one out or have one built.

I like my Roberts Slope Dred. It is Adi over Honduran Rosewwod with a deep body. Has a sound that sort of splits the difference between Rosewood and mahogany. Let me add that Dan is a really great guy to work with. Let me see…I’ve had a Kopp, a John Walker and a Roberts. I call these guys the Montana mafia. They are onto something that I like.

Is Roberts a former Gibson Custom Shop employee, like Kopp and Walker? His guitars certainly show a strong Gibson influence.

WHM: Dan worked for Flatiron and then Gibson. After that he went to work for SCGC.

Wild Bill: I had a Walker Wise River for a while. It was a great guitar, but the neck was a bit shallow for me. I have played a Lochsa. It remains one of the best rosewood dreads I have ever played or heard. Also, you might want to add Ren Ferguson to your Montana Mafia list.

I believe Kevin Kopp was in repairs at Gibson. Dan Roberts was also the production manager at Santa Cruz for something like 20 years. All three, Kopp, Walker and Roberts did work at Gibson at one point or another and yes, the influence certainly shows.

Talking

My Lochsa is going nowhere but my music room. I agree it is great instrument. I see Mr Ferguson has just introduced his first guitar. I’ll be in Bozeman at Music Villa in a month and looking forward to what Paul Decker and the gang have to say. I would think there is room for others in the M Mafia

Kevin Kopp may have worked in repairs earlier on at Gibson but he ended working in the custom shop with Ren Ferguson and John Walker…

Default Just love my two Roberts....

By a chance happening at the Bozeman airport in 2013, Dan noticed my Collings mandolin case...he was on his way to Texas to collaborate with master luthier Tom Ellis, and I was on my way to Alaska...we chatted, he gave me his card, and to really fast forward, I am just so lucky to own a Roberts Minstrel and Troubadour, and I think most of you will not believe this, but I am pretty sure my GAS has been forever cured.
All of my music mates commented on their tones from the first time they heard them, but the best thing is that my wife, who has a MAAAVALOUS ear and plays piano, fiddle and upright bass, always makes me put down my mandolin to play one of the Roberts along with her.
I struggled a bit last night to download a photo, but alas, it was late and I gave up.
There is NFI here, but if you have a lot of time on your hands, PM me and I can give you all the lowdown of working with Dan for a build....he is a fine craftsman and gentleman to have as a friend and a builder.
