Epiphone Emperor Swingster
Looking at buying an inexpensive hollow body.
I've been looking at used Gretsch 5420 , then I came across the Epiphone Emperor Swingster. It seems to be a fine guitar. I would appreciate any input from folks that have experience with these Epiphone Emperor Swingster guitars. Thanks, Thumb

I've played them side by side...
Buy the Gretsch - you won't regret it...

I had a Swingster white Royale, and now have a Gretsch 5422tg
the Swingster is a decent guitar, mine had a pretty fat neck, as well as what I perceived as huge frets. I never felt at home on it. Pickups (Swingbuckers) are far more "Gibson PAF" than they are "Gretschy" despite them looking more a "Gretsch" offering. The push/pull pots give some variance to tone, but the straight out humbucker sound is good. The Bigsby is well fit, I think later versions come with a roller bridge? Fit and finish on mine was good, some minor flaws with the finish, nothing horrible, there was a lot of wood shavings in mine, I was amazed with what came out of that thing. The gretcsh fit and finish I have is flawless, and everything is top shelf. I prefer the feel / neck of the Gretcsh, and the fret sizes are more typical to what I'd prefer. The blacktop pickups do have a decent "Gretch" vibe, but IMHO, they don't have a lot of output. So comparing to others, the 5422tg needs more volume when exchanging guitars in a session Given what I know, and my experience with both, I would buy the Gretsch again, probably pass on the Swingster. hope that helps...

rmp,
Thanks very much for your input. That's exactly the type info I was needing. Unfortunately I'm not able to go somewhere and do a side by side comparison and your information checks a lot of boxes on ny questions list. I appreciate your time...

I have played the Swingster and thought it was a pretty good guitar. I think the Gretsch has it beat. However, if you can afford it, consider a Guild X175b. The P90s sound great and it's not much more expensive than the Gretsch. But of the two you mentioned, I'd take the Gretsch.

In my Epiphone era, I always loved the look and had a touch of GAS for the Swingster. Never got one, so I can't really help you there, but, well, that's my 2 cents worth.
