AKG Perception mics-discontinued
I just noticed this today. I couldn’t find an explanation online at akg.com, I guess the line, which was made in China “under AKG supervision,” just ran its course. Also today, I found several “excellent”-rated, used Perception 420s for as low as $99, almost 50% below Sweetwater’s new, retail price. I just might have to get one.
UPDATE: It appears AKG has made cosmetic/branding changes, but is still selling the mics. The chassis, previously a light blue zinc/aluminum alloy, is now dark gray. The unit’s name has gone from Perception 420, for example, to P420. The functional descriptions, at the bottom of the web page, are identical. Price is the same. No idea what’s behind the change. Big deal or no?

Its exactly as you said. Its cosmetic changes only. I like this one better now.
The AKG was highly recommended because of its price and the high quality it delivers. Go for it if you're looking for a good beginner recording Mic.

I have a pair of AKG P-170s. They're great, & about $90 new.

Thanks for the info. All the reviews I have read on the AKG P series have been encouraging.

AKG isn't AKG anymore. Get what you like until the inventory runs out. Regards, Ty Ford |

Kev, I think there are at least four iterations of the C414.
Some have had concerns that the 414 lost it when it left its metal capsule parts behind. I'm not so inclined. I have a pair of BULS that work very well. I listened to them and the other model that AKG released at the same time ten or so years ago, maybe the EB? For me the BULS focused the voice ranges better. Regards, Ty Ford |

Holy cow. Thanks for this info, Ty. I guess I just bought a zombie mic. I think I will keep my eyes peeled for the inevitable fire sale.
