I am glad to read the good review! I want to see this one at the theater. I was going today to see it but my youngest daughter hijacked my plans and we saw Dr. Sleep instead (also a great movie BTW!).

We saw it yesterday and I'm glad we did. Excellent movie, and covered a lot of aspects of the time very well. Nothing from HWood is going to be perfect but this is a really good account of the first years of WW2 in the Pacific, up through the Midway battle. And of the sacrifices made by thousands of people in many countries. It was also very entertaining. Great movie for Veteran's Day weekend!

I am very much looking forward to seeing this movie, Bob. Thanks for the recommendation! I, too, have read a lot about Midway, so I am anxious to see this new movie.

Be sure to post your response after you see it. This premier hasn't been without controversy.

Midway won the weekend at $17.5 million. Not great but perhaps with some good word of mouth it will sustain for a few weeks.

I'll wait ... the reviews I read were anything but complimentary, garnering very few stars. But it wouldn't be the first movie that succeeded despite mediocre reviews. Besides, I'm a history buff ... if I could sit through "Pearl Harbor" I can suffer through anything.

I grew up watching John Wayne fight in every war the U.S was involved in, so I kinda like the genre...
I've also never been one to nit-pick details in these movies, I just want to be entertained for a couple of hours... I've talked with a handful of folks who have seen it already and were basically underwhelmed, and I'm seeing 42% on Rotten Tomatoes... It might be ok, but I think I'll pass till it hits Netfix or Prime...

Sounds like I wait for it to hit my big screen at home! Probably mostly 'cause in the rare event we go out to the movies, I'm not getting my wife to a war movie. |

Don't let the Rotten Tomatoes critics score turn you off from this. It isn't without its cheese, but overall I enjoyed it.

Glad it's worth a watch. I grew up on WWII films and have seen them all: 'The Great Escape' is still in my top three films of all time, but I also love those old naval films. Very nice too to see a less romanticised version with the less than glamorous planes featured. Personally, if I see one more programme or film over-inflating the contribution of Spitfires to the Allied effort I'll go mad. (What is often glossed over is that the Hurricane shot down more aircraft than the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain and the Mustang was actually overall most successful Allied fighter in terms of kills.)

Saw it this afternoon, and really enjoyed it!
My only two criticisms are the casting of Woody Harrelson as Nimitz (he's not believable at all), and I wish they had more coverage of Doolittle's raid. Definitely worth the price of admission, and a movie you should see on the big screen. scott |
