Default The Troubadour - original instrumental

Hi All,

This is an instrumental piece I came up with a few years ago after visiting with Tommy Emmanuel at a workshop and series of concerts in Skaneateles, NY.

Here is a photo my wife took of Tommy and I at the Syracuse, NY airport trading his Kalamazoo back and forth. He ended up teaching me some finer points on his song, "Lewis & Clark." We hung out for a couple of hours together while waiting for a flight to Chicago. My wife and I were heading back to Seattle, Tommy was heading to England for his 2nd daughter's birthday. Tommy was very easy to hang out with. I kept pinching myself.

The guitar I am playing in the video is a Collings OM1A with custom dread-depth body. Strings are D'Addario EJ16 (PB, light).

Thanks for listening...

- Glenn

Oh my Lord.

Now that is the best delayed flight story ever...

And your instrumental is beautiful.

Yes, it is a good story. It seemed unbelievable.

We had gone to the same workshop at Skaneateles the year before and stayed in the hotel room next to Tommy. I introduced myself to him in the hall as we were getting ready to go down to his workshop. He was extremely nice and later at the Syracuse performance dedicated his Lewis & Clark song to us, who had come from Lewis & Clark country. We had many encounters with Tommy, his manager, Gina, and his soundman, who came all the way from England.

The next year, when this photo was taken, we talked to Tommy after the workshop, he remembered us, but it was just not in the cards for us to have all those lucky, private encounters with him. After the workshop and a couple of concerts in Rochester and Syracuse, my wife and I were walking in the airport beyond security, telling each other, oh well, last year was magic, you can't expect things like that a 2nd time. But then we heard Tommy yelling over to us, "Hey Kids!" (We are actually older than he is!)

Well, there was Tommy with his soundman, at one of the empty gates, making up a song, which later showed up on his "Little By Little" album called "Waiting for a Plane." He asked for our opinion on the song and at that time he needed a bridge and an intro. The song still sounded cool! What could we say? Yes, this sounds wonderful!

It was amazing.

Tommy actually talked more to my wife when he found out she had been a 2nd grade teacher, and he was looking for gift ideas for his daughter, who at the time was turning 7 years old.

Wow… spectacular! Superb playing… and I love the Collings. I'd like to hear more of it.

You know, Glenn, I've probably waited for hundreds of flights, been to SYR more times than I could count… and I've NEVER gotten to play guitar with Tommy E… Incredible story!

Hi Kerbie,

That is so interesting that you would recognize that airport. I have been through there a lot myself because I have a daughter and her family living in Ithaca, NY. But it's also true that Tommy Emmanuel is not going to be hanging around there very often. We were just plain lucky! One of those lovely twists of fate.

Glenn, I've listened to a lot of music here in my 10+ years on the forum.

There are few songs that I would play over and over. This is one of them.
