Default Electric on acoustic amp

I'm not familiar with electric guitars. Can a electric guitar be played through a acoustic amp? What are the pros and cons? Tah

It won't hurt the amp but I'm thinking the tone won't be as good as a nice electric guitar amp. Pedals and EQ should help though, especially if you're looking for gain/distortion.

It should be fine. It probably won't sound very good (compared to a proper electric guitar tube amp), but you won't hurt your acoustic amp.

An ideal acoustic amp would be very clean and transparent but a good electric guitar amp deliberately breaks lots of hi-fi rules to alter the signal in a pleasing way and create the final sound. Really the amp & cab is as much a part of the instrument as the guitar.

You might or might not get a usable clean sound. Try it and see.

Tah guys, appreciate it

Yes, I will try it as soon as the new strings are put on it. Any recommendation on a good set of strings?

I was just given this vintage Japanese made uke my mate found on the road side throw out the other day.

It looks like a strat shape with a solid body. Don't know anymore about it, only that it is a Axiom brand.

Oh yeah, I'm playing it through a Fishman SA220 amp.

Would likely sound a little on the dull side. Electric amps tend to add some mids while acoustic amps are more full range. Basically the same reason acoustics sound too middy and no bass/treble through guitar amps.

I don't think you'd want to use that combination for Blues, Rock or Country but the right electric guitar paired with the right acoustic amp can produce very nice Jazz and laid back clean tones. I use my ES 137 and Fishman Loudbox for that. It's no Polytone but still very nice.

I used an Ultrasound AG30 as an on-stage monitor for electric guitar for quite a while, with a multi-effects unit in front of it doing the majority of the sound-shaping.

It worked well in a relatively low-volume environment, but didn't sound very nice when turned up more. I suspect the speaker in the AG30 wasn't really up to the task.

What kind of guitar are we talking about? This is a 'how long is a piece of string' question

That being said, I've been using D'Addario for decades, and despite trying other brands, have not found a good reason to change.

The guitar is very similar size to a strat, well actually it looks like a strat. Tah

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I play a lot of Floyd, Direstrait, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vauhn etc music, if that helps?

You want D'Addario electric strings. I would start by asking your guitar shop for a set of 9's. They might even string your guitar for you for a few bucks. There are many youtube videos providing instructions on this, if you are confident and reasonably good with the mechanics of this skill. Then move up to 10's when you re-string next time. If 9's felt better/were easier to play change back to them. No need to make playing harder than necessary.

My advice is always....acoustic guitars require acoustic amps, electric guitars require electric amps. Having said that, I played an electric guitar through a SWR California Blonde acoustic amp years ago, with surprisingly good results.

Good luck!
